"F" Brake & 1ST Gear Free-Wheel: Reassembly

    NOTE: Ensure piston seals are not damaged during installation.
  1. Install new "O" ring on "F" brake cylinder. Using a suitable press, install needle bearing into "F" brake cylinder and retain with snap ring. Apply a light coat of petroleum jelly to inner and outer sealing lips of piston and press into cylinder "F".
  2. Install spring plate. Using appropriate press, compress plate and install split retaining ring. Remove cylinder "F" from press. Install clutch pack starting with spring disc. See Figure . Press cover washer into 1st gear free-wheel outer race. Install 1st gear free-wheel cage with collar facing up into outer race. Install second cover washer into 1st gear free-wheel outer race. Install inner race by rotating clockwise into 1st gear free-wheel cage.
  3. Ensure inner race of 1st gear free-wheel rotates freely clockwise when holding outer race. Press in retaining disc and secure using snap ring. Install 1st gear free-wheel unit in brake "F" cylinder and insert snap ring. Insert Lifting Fixture (24 1 280) into brake "F" so openings in collar of lifting fixture align with 3 lugs of cylinder hub. Rotate brake "F" cylinder so 3 bore holes on outside surface of cylinder line up between 2 teeth on 1st gear free-wheel outer race. Mark top edges of 2 free-wheel outer race teeth.
  4. With bellhousing facing up, install brake "F" with marked teeth of free-wheel race engage under web (6 o'clock position) of transmission case. Align oil feed holes in brake cylinder "F" with oil bores in rear of transmission case and install 12 Torx bolts. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS  .
