Rear Wheel Bearing: Removal

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel(s).
  2. Remove brake disc. See BRAKE DISCS  .
  3. Remove ABS sensor. See appropriate ANTI-LOCK article.
  4. Unfasten stabilizer arm on stabilizer of wheel carrier.
  5. Screw special tool (33 2 116) onto drive flange with wheel studs. Drive out hub of driver flange with special tool (33 4 201/202/203). See Fig 1 .
  6. Remove inner bearing race using special tool (33 3 240). See Fig 2 .
  7. If bearing inner race remains on the stub axle, use the following procedure.
    • Bend dust cover, insert wrench key and unscrew guard. See Fig 3 .
    • Pull off bearing inner race and dust cover using special tool (31 2 100). See Fig 4 .
    • Screw on guard (1). Install new dust cover (2). Screw on special tool (31 2 110) the whole length of threads. See Fig 5 .
    • Slide and pull on new bearing unit using special tool (31 2 110).
  8. Lift out circlip (1). See Fig 6 .
  9. Remove wheel bearing with special tool (33 3 261/ 262/ 263). See Fig 7 .
