Passenger-Side Air Bag Unit Operation

If vehicle is equipped with passenger-side air bag, it is installed inside dash above glove box. It is accessible by removing tray or panel on top of passenger's dash. Air bag unit consists of inflatable air bag, 2 gas generators, and 2 igniters. Air bag will inflate to maximum expansion after about 35 milliseconds. Gas is then released by a filtered ventilation area on windshield side of air bag, and air bag collapses.

A 2-pin plug connector with gold-plated terminals is mounted to inflator unit at rear of air bag module. If plug connector is disconnected for any reason, a safety shorting spring inside connector spreads open to touch both terminals. This prevents accidental operation of system by static electricity or careless handling.
