Parking Brake
The parking brake can be adjusted with the wheels installed, although the rear of the car will need to be lifted slightly to spin the rear wheels. It can only be adjusted correctly if handbrake cables and all moving parts move easily and function correctly.
Basic handbrake adjustment is necessary after replacing brake shoes, replacing brake drums/discs, resetting slack control device, and if handbrake lever travel is more than ten teeth.
- Remove parking brake lever boot from console.
- Unscrew locknut using special tool 34 1 030 and loosen cable completely. See Fig 1 .
- Raise and support rear of vehicle. Remove one lug bolt from each rear wheel. Rotate wheel 45 degrees back from bottom until lug bolt hole is aligned with parking brake adjuster star. Using a flat blade screw driver, turn adjuster star to expand brake shoes until wheel can no longer rotate, then back adjuster off about 8 notches. See Fig 2 .
- Repeat procedure on opposite rear wheel.
- Adjust parking brake Bowden cables. See PARKING BRAKE BOWDEN CABLES .
- Set and release parking park lever several times to seat cable and shoes.
- Pull parking brake lever up 4 notches. Tighten cable adjusting nuts until it is just possible to rotate rear wheels with slight resistance.
- Release parking brake lever and ensure rear wheels rotate freely.
- Turn ignition switch on, with engine off. With parking brake released, ensure instrument panel warning light is off. Pull lever up to ensure warning light illuminates.
- Install parking brake lever boot. Install rear wheel lug bolts. Tighten to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Lower vehicle.
- If rear brake discs or parking brake shoes have been replaced, break in by driving on a safe road and full stop 5 times from 30 mph (50 km/h). Allow brakes to cool, and repeat 5 stops.
