Parking Brake
NOTE:
On vehicles with discs, the parking brake system, which is completely independent of the service brakes, is only subjected to limited wear since the parking brake will not be needed during normal operation. This consequently reduces the friction torque, which is caused by corrosion of brake drums or contamination of liners. To acquire optimal parking brake efficiency it will normally be sufficient to drive the car from the parking lot to the workplace (maximum 1300 ft.) with the parking brake applied. Pull up lever until resistance is felt and then one more tooth. Do this before further adjustment of the parking brake.
- Release parking brake and check cables for free operation.
- Lift out front clamp on parking brake lever rubber cap.
- Pull off rubber cap and disconnect rear clamp.
- Unscrew adjusting bolts.
- On vehicles with drums, operate brake pedal several times. Basic clearance will be adjusted automatically. This is indicated by a clicking noise on the rear wheels. Function of automatic slack control can be checked through a wheel bolt bore.
- On vehicles with discs, lift and support rear axle.
- Remove one wheel bolt on each rear wheel.
- Turn wheels so that each tapped bore is approximately 30° behind the perpendicular on top.
- Turn adjusting nut with a screwdriver to move out the parking brake shoes and prevent the brake disc from turning. See Fig 1 .
- Loosen adjusting nut by 3 or 4 threads. Left adjusting nut is turned up to tighten and right is turned down. Brake disc must turn easily.
- Adjust parking brake cable. See PARKING BRAKE CABLE .
- Reassemble components. Tighten wheel bolt to specification. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS .
- Break in parking brake by making 5 full stops from 30 mph (50 km/h) with parking brake. Let brakes cool and then repeat the 5 stops.
