Rear Brake Shoes (With Rear Drum Brakes): Removal

  1. Raise vehicle and remove rear wheels.
  2. Remove the internal hex head mounting screw from the brake drum.
  3. Remove brake drum by loosening parking brake cables and unscrewing automatic slack control enough that brake drum can be pulled off.
  4. Push in return springs and turn 90°.
  5. Disconnect bottom return spring at front.
  6. Pull brake shoes out of wheel brake cylinder.
  7. Disconnect top return spring at front.
  8. Remove front brake shoes with automatic slack control.
  9. Disconnect parking brake cable.
  10. Remove rear brake shoes.
  11. Disassemble the automatic adjusting mechanism. Note bends of return springs. Clean the threads of the adjusting pinion and check that all parts are free of corrosion and the assembly operates smoothly. Give threads a light coat of grease.
