Rear Axle Wheel Bearings: Removal

  1. Raise and support vehicle. Remove wheel(s).
  2. Remove axle shaft assembly. See appropriate AXLE SHAFT article.
  3. Loosen parking brake cables and unscrew automatic slack control enough to pull off brake drum on vehicles so equipped.
  4. On 323, 325 e/i and ABS vehicles remove brake disc. See BRAKE DISCS  .
  5. Unscrew exhaust assembly.
  6. Drive out rear axle shaft with special tool 33 4 010.
  7. Lift out circlip. See Fig 1 .
  8. Pull out wheel bearing with special tool 33 4 041. On 323i, 325e/i and cars with ABS from 1986 use special tool 33 4 031. See Fig 2 .
  9. Use special tool 33 4 045. See Fig 2 .
  10. If applicable, 323i, 325e/i and cars with ABS from 1986 on use special tool 33 4 090 and 33 1 307 to pull inner bearing shell off of rear axle shaft. Others use special tool 00 7 500 and a thrust piece. See Fig 3 .
