Gear & Selector Shaft Assemblies

  1. Install mainshaft and countershaft assemblies in intermediate transmission case. Install appropriate shim. Heat bearing race to about 175°F (80°C) and push onto mainshaft. Press needle bearing and reverse gear onto mainshaft. Slide 5th gear synchromesh assembly onto mainshaft.
  2. Push 5th/Reverse shift rod up to spring in transmission case from input shaft end. Insert locking balls and press down, pushing rod on through to lock.
  3. Insert 5th/Reverse shift fork in sliding sleeve. Install sleeve on mainshaft with pins facing out. Guide 5th/Reverse shift fork onto selector rod and drive in retainer pin (roll pin).
  4. Drive sleeve against stop on mainshaft spline. Heat bearing race to about 175°F (80°C) and push mainshaft on to sleeve. Install synchromesh blocking ring, needle bearing and 5th gear onto mainshaft.
  5. Install inner roller bearing and 5th counter gear on countershaft. Using appropriate driver, drive bearing race onto countershaft. Measure distance between spacer and bearing race and take up countershaft end play with appropriate shims. Install washer with bevelled side out on mainshaft. Heat speedometer gear and push onto mainshaft.
  6. Install 1st/2nd and 3rd/4th shift forks. Push in 3rd/4th shift rod through shift fork to spring. Insert locating ball and locking ball and press down. Push 3rd/4th shift rod on through to lock making sure that opening on shift rod faces 5th/Reverse shift rod. Drive in retainer pin (roll pin).
  7. Push in 1st/2nd shift rod through fork to spring in transmission case. Install driving dog. Install locating ball and locking ball and press down. Push 1st/2nd shift rod on through to lock and drive in retainer pin (roll pin).
  8. Push in upper selector rod with opening facing out. Install selector arm with long side facing 3rd/4th shift rod.
  9. Install lower selector rod with opening facing up. Install operating lever with sharp edge facing up and push in selector rod.
  10. Install bolt in top of transmission case with Loctite (or equivalent) making sure that center engages bore of operating lever. Test operating lever for ease of movement. Push clamp onto lower selector rod with bevelled side facing shift fork.
  11. Install bolt in side of transmission case with Loctite (or equivalent) making sure that center engages groove in lower selector rod. Hold 4 rollers on selector rod with grease.
