Transmission Bearing Assemblies: Installation

  1. For layshaft, knock in bearing shell with Special Tools (231 260) and (00 5 500). Determine axial play by using a dial gauge and holder, install dial gauge so that tip is on tooth of layshaft.
  2. insert selector shaft with Special Tool (23 1 250). Swing selector shaft outwards with roller above locking lever. Move end of spring over high spot into installed position.
  3. Press selector shaft down in this position (DO NOT KNOCK). Mount selector shaft with socket head bolt and tighten bolt before removing Special Tool. Check in stalled position of locking lever and pressure pin.
  4. For output shaft bearing, determine width of spacer. Use depth indicator gauge for measurement. Set gauge on outer ridge of bearing bore. Measure from bottom bearing seat to top of ridge.
  5. Measure distance by measuring width of new bearing. Subtract width of new bearing from bearing seat-to-ridge measurement to determine correct thickness of spacer. Install spacer and bearing.
    NOTE: Grooved ball bearing Inner race has a profusion. Install race so that protrusion faces gear set If necessary, knock in race against stop with Special Tool (13 f 470).
  6. For layshaft bearing, knock in bearing shell with Special Tools (23 1 260) and (00 5 500). Install old spacers. Knock bearing shell into case front section to fit tight with Special Tools (231 260) and (00 5 500). Oil groove must be aligned with groove in case.
  7. Place layshaft with roller bearings in case rear section. Mount case front section and secure with 2 bolts positioned opposite each other. Center case front section with dowel pins.
