Removal 325e, 528e, 533i, 633CSi & 733i With ZF 4HP-22

  1. Disconnect battery ground cable. Detach transmission throttle cable from accelerator cross shaft and bracket. Remove exhaust assembly and heat shields. Remove oil filler tube from transmission and plug hole in transmission. Remove all transmission-to-engine bolts that can be removed from above.
  2. Drain transmission fluid. Detach exhaust system bracket from transmission extension housing. Disconnect exhaust pipe from exhaust manifold. Turn steering wheel to full left lock to provide clearance for removal. Disconnect propeller shaft from transmission output flange by removing 3 bolts and nut.
  3. Remove bolts from center support to body. Position propeller shaft out of the way. Disconnect transmission shift lever from selector lever rod. Disconnect electrical leads from neutral safety switch.
  4. Note position of speed sensor and reference mark sensor. Disconnect and remove speed and reference mark sensors from torque converter housing. Remove thrust bracket (if equipped) and converter cover plate. Rotate engine and remove 4 converter-to-drive plate bolts.
  5. Disconnect oil cooler lines from transmission. Position a jack under transmission and disconnect crossmember. Remove remaining transmission-to-engine attaching bolts and remove transmission.
