Adjustment Overview - Final Drive
Pinion Shaft and Ring Gear, Adjusting
- Careful adjustment of the ring gear and pinion shaft is essential to ensure that the final drive gives long service and runs silently. The location for the smoothest running is determined by moving pinion axially whereby ring gear is moved far enough out of the backlash-free position so that the backlash is within specified tolerances.
- The goal of the adjustment is to reach the greatest smoothness.
- The pinion and ring gear with differential can be replace separately. If at a running time of over 100 000 km (0 miles) the pinion or the ring gear is damaged, it is advisable to replace both components.
- Pay attention to the general repair information for bearings and shims.
- If the pinion is replaced or there are metal shavings in the transmission fluid, then always replace the double angular contact ball bearing on the pinion.

- 2 - Pinion with Installed Double Angular Contact Ball Bearing, Preload Sleeve and Circlip
- 3 - Double Angular Contact Ball Bearing
- M - Dimension of the center differential to the outer race of the double angular contact ball bearing
- R - Actual dimension between ring gear axis and face of drive pinion in position of quietest running 1)
- Vo - Hypoid Offset
1)
- The dimension R generally is for all drivetrains 60.00 mm. There is no individual dimension
- The dimension R is then adjusted on the Measuring Set - Adjustable Master Gauge :VW 385/30 .
- S1 - Ring gear adjustment shim in final drive cover
- S2 - Ring gear shim inside the transmission housing
- S3 - Shim for positioning drive pinion in transmission housing
- S4 - Shim for positioning the double angular contact ball bearing/pinion in the transmission housing
Adjustment Overview
- When performing assembly work on the transmission a new adjustment of the pinion ring gear (differential) is only required if components were replaced which directly influence the final drive adjustment.
- No adjustment is needed when replacing drive pinion double angular contact ball bearing.
- Note the following table to avoid unnecessary adjustments:
| To be adjusted: | Pinion | Ring gear | Torsional backlash | ||
| (S3 + S4 ) | (S1 + S2 ) | 0.15 ± 0.04 mm | |||

If the pinion and ring gear (differential) must be adjusted, maintain the following sequence, in the interests of a rational sequence:
- Total shim thickness Stotal Determine (S1 + S2 ) for specified preload of tapered roller bearing/differential.
- Determine the shim S3 so that the dimension from center of ring gear to front side of pinion corresponds to the installation dimension determined during production.
- Shim S 4 for positioning the double angular contact ball bearing/pinion in the transmission housing.
- Total shim thickness Stotal Distribute (S1 + S2 ) so that the specified torsional backlash is present between the ring gear and the pinion.
