Airbag Unit With Igniter, Removing And Installing: Removing
Conditions
- To enable turning the steering wheel into the removal position on a vehicle with Electronic Steering Column Lock Control Module -J764- the ignition remains switched on for the following steps.
-- Move the steering wheel as far to the rear and down as possible. Use the full steering column adjustment range for this.
-- Move the steering wheel -1- out of the straight-ahead position by turning it clockwise 90° -arrow A-, so that the opening -arrow B- on the rear side of the steering wheel faces directly upward (approximately 12 o'clock position).
-- Guide a Phillips head screwdriver -1- or Torx screwdriver T15 (approximately 80 mm long) in the opening until it stops.
-- Release the locking bracket for the airbag by pulling the screwdriver upward with force -arrow-.
-- The airbag catch -arrow B- is loosened from the steering wheel by pressing down the locking bracket -1-. (Shown with the airbag removed).
Tip
Never remove the airbag unit by pulling forcefully.
-- If the airbag unit cannot be detached, push it back into the steering wheel and repeat the procedure.
-- Move the steering wheel -1- back counter-clockwise 180° -arrow A-, so that the opening -arrow B- on the rear side of the steering wheel faces directly upward (approximately in the 12 o'clock position).
-- Loosen the second catch -arrow A- on the steering wheel.
Conditions
- The airbag unit remains in the steering wheel.
-- Bring the steering wheel back into the center (wheels are straight).
-- Remove the airbag -1- from the steering wheel slightly.
Pyrotechnical components can deploy unintentionally.
Risk of injury.
- Discharge the static electricity: quickly touch the door striker.
-- Disconnect the connector -2-.
-- Remove the connector lock -4- and disconnect the connector -3-.
Conditions
- Store the airbag with the cushion facing upward.
