Steering Wheel Overview

NOTE:
For procedures specific to the airbag system or the airbag unit.
CAUTION:
- Before servicing any part of the vehicle electrical system, always disconnect the battery ground strap.
Up to 1995 models:
- Before working on any airbag or steering column component, always disconnect the airbag power supply connector COMPONENT LOCATION OVERVIEW - AIRBAG SYSTEM . Disconnecting battery ground strap alone will not prevent accidental airbag release.
From 1996 models:
- The single-pin airbag voltage supply connector is eliminated.
- It is only necessary to disconnect the battery ground strap.
- All other airbag system safety precautions are still applicable.
WARNING:
Before removing steering column:
- Place road wheels in straight- ahead position.
- Remove steering wheel (to ensure that the spiral spring in the steering wheel is not damaged).
- Steering wheel
- Before removing, remove upper portion of steering column switch and disconnect airbag unit connector -6-
- Remove and install with road wheels positioned straight ahead
- Turn signal switch lever must be in center position when removing and installing steering wheel
- Removing and installing airbag spiral spring
- Install only factory-approved steering wheel
- Nut
- 40 Nm (30 ft lb)
- Safety clamp
- Airbag unit
To remove:
-- Disconnect battery ground strap
-- Remove Torx® bolts from steering wheel using Snap-On tool FTX30A or equivalent
-- Tilt airbag unit downward.
-- Unlatch safety clamp
-- Disconnect harness connector for airbag unit
-- Remove airbag unit
To install:
-- Install airbag unit mounting screws by hand
-- Tighten right screw, then left screw, to specifications
- Torx screw
- 6 Nm (53 in lb)
- Airbag unit connector
- Remove upper section of steering column switch, for access
- Disconnect, before removing steering wheel
