Ribbed Belt For Accessories, Checking
Engine damage caused by the camshaft drive skipping.
- Only rotate the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation.
Maintenance point only applies to certain countries: Observe the Maintenance Table specification!
Removal Procedures:
-- Remove the engine cover. Refer to ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the ribbed belt. Refer to RIBBED BELT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING (EA 888EVO4) , or RIBBED BELT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING (EA 839) .
Procedure :
-- Check the removed ribbed belt along the entire length as well as the visible belt pulleys on the engine. Note the following points when doing this:
- Tears or breaks on the tension belt tread and the rear side (cracks, core ruptures, cross sectional breaks)
- Separation (cover layer, belt cords)
- Fraying of cords
- Foreign objects embedded in the tension belt tread and on the back side
- Excessive oil and grease on the rollers and the belt pulleys
- Belt pulley wear on the flanks (material wear, frayed flanks, surface cracks) -image-
-- Applies to vehicles with power steering pump: check the generator freewheel.
-- If there are defects, replace the damaged components.
Installation procedures occur in reverse order.
The illustration above shows a possible damage pattern of the belt pulley. The material wear at the affected sides for the rib treads can appear in various forms.
