Left Seal, Replacing

Removing and Installing the left flange shaft and the left flange shaft seals on the rear final drive.

Special tools and workshop equipment required

Procedure

-- With the rear final drive installed, remove the left drive axle. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the spindle from the bridge of the Puller:VAS 251 415 and install the Transmission Support - Bolt:3282/34 in its place.

-- Attach the bridge -A- with two M8 x 30 bolts -arrows- to the flange shaft.

-- Remove the flange shaft.

-- Pry off the flange shaft seal with the Puller - Seal Lever:VW 681 .

-- Lightly lubricate the outer diameter of the new seal -1- and use the Seal Installer - Flange Shaft:T10049 to drive it in to dimension -a-. While doing so, do not tilt the seal.

Dimension -a- = 4.8 ± 0.1 mm; Measured from the housing flat surface to seal.
Do not drive in the seal all the way.
Maintain a parallel alignment of a maximum 0.25 mm between the seal -1- to the housing flat surface.

-- Fill the space between the sealing/dust lip halfway with Sealing Grease:G 052 128 A1 .

-- Replace the flange shaft circlip. Refer to Figure.

-- Install the flange shaft using a plastic mallet and if necessary a drift.

-- Install the drive axle. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Check the rear final drive gear oil level. Refer to GEAR OIL .
