Brake Pads, Removing And Installing, Single-Piston Brake Excluding 1ZD, Dual-Piston Brakes: Installing

Install in the reverse order of removal while noting the following:

-- Check the brake rotors for wear and damage. Refer to BRAKE ROTOR, CHECKING .

• Use the complete repair kit when installing new brake pads.
• Components to be used when installing new brake pads. Refer to Electronic Parts Information (ETKA).

• Use only mineral spirits to clean the brake caliper.
• Check the protective caps of the brake caliper pistons for damage and install the complete repair kit, if necessary. Refer to BRAKE CALIPER PISTON, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
• Check the bearing bushings of the guide pins for damage and check that the guide pins move easily. Install the complete repair kit, if necessary. Refer to BEARING BUSHING AND GUIDE PIN, REPLACING .

-- If the brake fluid is up to the "MAX" marking on used brake pads, it must be extracted.

-- Evacuate the brake fluid -2- in the brake fluid reservoir with the screen installed -1-, using the Brake Filling and Bleeding Equipment:VAS 6860  or Brake Charger/Bleeder Unit:VAS 5234  (example illustration).

Single-Piston Brakes:

-- Use the Piston Resetting Tool:T10145  -item A- to press the brake caliper piston completely back into the brake caliper.

Dual-Piston Brakes:

-- Place a wooden board -3- or a brake pad in the shaft, so that both brake caliper pistons are reset evenly in the brake pad -1- using the Piston Resetting Tool:T10145  -item 2-.

-- Clean the brake carrier -1- at the contact surfaces -2- for the brake pads.

-- Insert the springs -2- at the brake carrier -1-, lock and pay attention to proper seating.

-- If equipped, remove the protective film from the backing plate of the brake pad.

-- If re-using, install the marked brake pads in the same location.

-- Install the brake pads while paying attention to the installed position. Refer to the graphic under list item 23 in OVERVIEW - SINGLE-PISTON BRAKE EXCLUDING 1ZD .

-- Push the outer brake pad -1- first at an angle between the springs -3- -arrow- and at the same time do not bend the springs.

-- Pivot the brake pad to the brake rotor.

-- Repeat the procedure on the inner brake pad.

-- Align the brake pads -3- in the brake pad springs -2-.

• After installing the brake pads pay attention that all brake pad springs are seated correctly.

-- Push the brake caliper over the installed brake pads.

-- Tighten the brake caliper bolts -arrows- to the required tightening specification by counterholding at the guide pins -1 and 2-.

• Make sure the brake hose is routed correctly.
• Make sure the brake hose is not pinched, bent, twisted or rubbing against the vehicle.

-- Connect the connector -arrow- for the brake pad wear indicator contact on the right brake caliper.

-- With the vehicle stationary, firmly press the brake pedal several times so that the brake pads in the operating condition properly sit in their respective position.

-- Check brake fluid level, and fill if necessary.
