Airbag Unit With Igniter, Removing And Installing: Removing
-- Pay attention to the safety precautions when working with pyrotechnic components. Refer to SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .
Risk of airbag deployment.
Risk of injury.
- Check if the airbag indicator lamp turns on or blinks.
- If the airbag indicator lamp turns on or blinks, the DTC memory must be read.
- If there is a DTC memory entry, the Guided Fault Finding instructions must always be followed.
- To enable turning the steering wheel into the removal position on a vehicle with Electronic Steering Column Lock Control Module -J764- the ignition remains switched on for the following steps.
-- Move the steering wheel as far to the rear and down as possible. Use the full steering column adjustment range for this.
-- Move the steering wheel -1- out of the straight-ahead position by turning it clockwise 115° -arrow A-, so that the opening -arrow B- on the rear side of the steering wheel faces directly upward (approximately 12 o'clock position).
-- Guide a flat-head screwdriver -2- (approximately 100 mm long)in the opening of the steering wheel -1- all the way -arrow-.
-- Pull the screwdriver -1- forcefully upward -arrow A- ; this will press down on the locking bracket -2- and the airbag retainer will be released from the steering wheel -B arrow-.
-- Turn the steering wheel back and make sure that the airbag does not re-engage on the side it was released.
-- Move the steering wheel -1- out of the straight-ahead position by turning it counter-clockwise 115° -arrow A-, so that the opening -arrow B- on the rear side of the steering wheel faces directly upward (approximately 12 o'clock position).
-- Guide a flat-head screwdriver -2- (approximately 100 mm long)in the opening of the steering wheel -1- all the way -arrow-.
There is a risk of damaging the airbag unit if force is used.
- Never remove the airbag unit by pulling forcefully.
-- Pull the screwdriver -1- forcefully upward -arrow A- ; this will press down on the locking bracket -2- and the airbag retainer will be released from the steering wheel -B arrow-.
-- If the airbag unit cannot be detached, push it back into the steering wheel and repeat the procedure.
- The airbag unit remains in the steering wheel.
-- Bring the steering wheel back into the center (wheels are straight).
Risk of airbag deployment.
Risk of injury.
- If >>short circuit to positive<< is a DTC memory entry, disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .
- If the airbag indicator lamp does not turn on or blink, or there is no DTC memory entry with >>short circuit to positive<< : switch off the ignition, keep the ignition key outside of the vehicle and wait 10 seconds.
Pyrotechnical components can deploy unintentionally.
Risk of injury.
- Discharge the static electricity: quickly touch the door striker.
-- Remove the airbag -3- from the steering wheel slightly.
-- Remove the connector lock -1- and disconnect the connector -2- -arrow-.
-- Disconnect the connector for the buttons in the steering wheel.
Risk of airbag deployment
There is a risk of injury.
- Store the airbag with the cushion facing upward.
