Valve Stem Seals, Removing And Installing, Cylinder Head Installed: Installing

• In order not to damage the valve stem seal -4- during installation, mount the Assembly Tool : T40452  -item 3- on the valve stem -2-.

-- Lightly oil the valve stem seal sealing lip.

• Depending on the version/manufacturer of the valve stem seal, use the Seal Installer - Valve Stem: 3365  or Fitting Tool : T40376/1  from the Fitting Tool: T40376A  .

-- Insert the valve stem seal into the seal installer -5- and carefully press it all the way onto the valve guide -1- over the Assembly Tool : T40452  (example illustration).

-- Remove the Assembly Tool : T40452  .

If the valve keepers were removed from the assembly cartridge, they must be inserted into the Valve Cotter Tool Kit - Valve Insertion Device : VAS 5161/18  first.

• The large diameter of the valve keepers point upward.

-- Press the assembly cartridge from above onto valve retainer inserting tool and valve keepers.

-- Insert the valve spring and the valve spring retainer. Refer to Figure.

-- Attach the Guide Plate: VAS 5161A/44  onto the cylinder head again.

-- Insert the assembly cartridge into the guide plate.

-- Press the pressure fork down and pull the knurled bolt up while turning left and right. This inserts the valve keepers.

-- Release the pressure fork with the knurled bolt still raised.

-- Repeat the procedure on each valve.

Assembling 

Assemble in the reverse order of removal. Note the following:

-- Install the camshafts. Refer to CAMSHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Install the spark plugs. Refer to OVERVIEW - IGNITION SYSTEM .
