Airbag Unit With Igniter, Removing And Installing: Removing
The airbag unit with Driver Airbag Igniter - N95- will be called the airbag unit in the information that follows.
Risk of airbag deployment.
Risk of injury.
- Check if the airbag indicator lamp turns on or blinks.
- If the airbag indicator lamp is on or flashes, read out the DTC memory.
- If "short circuit to positive" is a DTC memory entry, disconnect the battery. "Electrical Equipment; RG27; Battery; Battery, Disconnecting and Connecting".
- If there is a DTC memory entry, the Guided Fault Finding instructions must always be followed.
- If the airbag indicator lamp is not on or does not flash, switch off the ignition. Place the vehicle key and other start authorization systems (such as smartphones) outside of the vehicle and wait for 10 seconds.
-- Move the front seat as far back as possible.
-- Move the steering wheel back and downward.
-- Move the steering wheel -1- out of the straight-ahead position by turning it clockwise 90° -arrow A-, so that the opening -arrow B- on the rear side of the steering wheel faces directly upward.
-- Guide a Phillips head screwdriver -1- or Torx screwdriver T15 in the opening until it stops.
-- Release the locking bracket for the airbag unit by pulling the screwdriver upward with force -arrow-.
-- The airbag catch -arrow B- is loosened from the steering wheel by pressing down the locking bracket -1-.
-- Move the steering wheel counter-clockwise 180° -arrow A-, so that the opening -arrow B- on the rear side of the steering wheel faces directly upward.
-- Guide the screwdriver -1- all the way into the opening.
-- Release the locking bracket for the airbag by pulling the screwdriver upward with force -arrow-.
-- This will loosen the second locking tab -arrow A- on the steering wheel.
-- If the airbag unit cannot be detached, push it back into the steering wheel and repeat the procedure.
-- Bring the steering wheel in the center position.
-- Switch off the ignition and electrical equipment.
-- Place the vehicle key and other start authorization systems (such as smartphones) outside of the vehicle interior.
Pyrotechnical components can deploy unintentionally.
Risk of injury.
- Discharge the static electricity: quickly touch the door striker.
-- Remove the airbag unit -1- from the steering wheel slightly.
-- Release and disconnect the connector -2-.
-- Remove the connector lock -4- and disconnect the connector -3-.
-- Keep the cushion facing upward when setting the airbag unit down.
