Headliner, Lowering

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

• Pry Lever :80-200 
• Removal Wedge :T40233 
• Scraper Set :VAS 6845 

Procedure 

-- Move the rear headrests into the lowest position.

-- Remove the A-pillar upper trim panels. Refer to A-Pillar Upper Trim Panel, Removing and Installing  .

-- Loosen the B-pillar upper trim panels and move to the side with the strap. Refer to B-PILLAR UPPER TRIM PANEL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING  .

-- Remove the D-pillar trim panels. Refer to D-Pillar Trim Panel, Removing and Installing  .

-- Remove the sun visors. Refer to Sun Visor, Removing and Installing .

-- Remove the sun visor center support. Refer to Sun Visor Center Support, Removing and Installing .

-- Remove the vanity mirror lamp. Refer to DRIVER/FRONT PASSENGER VANITY MIRROR LAMP W20/W14, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the roof grab handle. Refer to Roof Grab Handle, Removing and Installing .

-- Free up the headliner near the luggage compartment and inner door seals.

-- Lift the headliner -1- over the C-pillar trim panels -2-.

Requirement

• The outer edge -arrow- must not be bent.

-- Unclip the rear headliner using the Pry Lever :80 - 200  at the clips -1- and -3- from the body -arrows-.

-- Unclip the center of the headliner at the centering pin -2- from the body.

-- Carefully lower the back of the headliner and put it down.

-- If equipped, unclip the cover -1- on the side using the clip-release lever no. from the Scraper Set :VAS 6845  -arrow A- through -arrow C-.

-- Disengage the front cover and remove toward the rear.

Versions without Sliding Sunroof

-- Remove the front roof module. Refer to FRONT INTERIOR LAMP/READING LAMP, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Lower the headliner and place it on the seats.

Continuation for all vehicles

Vehicles with sliding sunroof

-- Open the sunroof shade.

-- To avoid getting dirt on the headliner, clean the Removal Wedge :T40233  .

-- Push the trim removal wedge between the frame -1- for the sliding sunroof and the headliner.

-- Using the trim removal wedge, loosen the headliner all the way around the sunroof frame -arrows-.

-- Unclip the headliner -3- together with the front roof module -1- from the clamp -2- using the scraper no. from the Scraper Set :VAS 6845  and carefully lower it.

-- Disconnect the connector and free up the wiring harness.

-- Lower the headliner -3- and place it on the seats.

Continuation for all vehicles

Installing

Install in the reverse order of removal while noting the following:

-- Align the headliner, press in the centering pin at the rear of the headliner until it engages audibly in the body mounting point.

-- Install the sun visor center support. Refer to Sun Visor Center Support, Removing and Installing .

-- Lift the headliner carefully over the C-pillar trim panel.

-- Stretch over the lip of the luggage compartment and inner door seals.

Vehicles with sliding sunroof

-- Clip the sides of the headliner into the sunroof frame first, and then into the front and rear.
