Filling And Bleeding The Coolant
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Cooling System Tester - Adapter:V.A.G 1274/8
- Cooling System Charge Kit:VAS 6096
Procedure
-- Remove the cover -1- by pulling toward the rear -arrows-.
-- Cut the seal loop -3-.
The cooling system can be under pressure. Risk of scalding by hot steam and hot coolant.
Possibility of scalding the skin and other parts of the body.
- Wear safety gloves.
- Wear protective eyewear.
- Reduce the pressure: cover the coolant expansion tank cap with a suitable towel and carefully open.
-- Remove the coolant expansion tank -2- cap -1-.
-- Check if the electrodes -2- from the Engine Coolant Level Sensor -G3237- in the coolant expansion tank are covered with coolant -1-.
-- If so, extract coolant from the coolant expansion tank using the AdBlue Vacuum Box -VAS 6557A- until the electrodes are free.
Filling and Bleeding the Coolant
Risk of damaging the assemblies due to insufficiently filling or bleeding.
- Never move or tow the vehicle without the cooling system full and the bleeding performed.
- Bleed the cooling system even if only slightly filling after repair.
-- Perform the "opening electric activated valves of the cooling system for discharging and filling" function using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester. Refer to the appropriate Service Information .
-- Fill the coolant reservoir of the Cooling System Charge Kit:VAS 6096 with 20 liters of coolant with the proper mixture ratio.
-- To make the filling procedure easier, position the coolant reservoir as high up as possible, for example on a workshop cart or the engine and gearbox jack.
-- Install the Cooling System Tester - Adapter:V.A.G 1274/8 on the coolant expansion tank.
-- Assemble the cooling system charge kit on the adapter.
-- Guide the drain hose -2- into a small container -3-.
Tip
A small amount of coolant which should be collected is drawn off with the discharged air.
-- Close the valves -A- and -B- by turning lever at a right angle to the flow direction.
-- Connect the hose -4- to the compressed air.
Condition
- Pressure: 7 to 10 bar (101.53 to 145.04 psi) pressure.
-- Open the valve -B- to do so turn the lever in the flow direction.
Condition
- The suction jet pump generates pressure in the coolant system; indicator on display instrument must move into green area.
-- Additionally, briefly open the valve -A-, to fill the coolant reservoir hose of the cooling system charging kit with coolant.
-- Close the valve -A- again.
-- Open the valve -B- for an additional two minutes.
Condition
- More pressure is generated in the coolant system by the suction jet pump; indicator on display instrument must stay in the green area.
-- Close the valve -B-.
Condition
- Needle in the display instrument must remain in the green region, then the sufficient vacuum in the cooling system is obtained for the upcoming filling.
- Repeat the procedure if the needle goes below the green range.
- If the vacuum decreases, check the cooling system for leaks.
-- Remove the pressure hose.
-- Open the valve -A-.
Condition
- The vacuum in the cooling system causes the coolant to be extracted from the cooling system charge kit coolant reservoir and the cooling system is being filled.
-- Remove the cooling system charge unit from the coolant reservoir.
-- Fill the coolant up to the lower edge -2- of the cap threads.
-- Perform the "bleeding the cooling system" function using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester. Refer to Diagnostic Entries .
Coolant Level, Checking
The cooling system can be under pressure. Risk of scalding by hot steam and hot coolant.
Possibility of scalding the skin and other parts of the body.
- Wear safety gloves.
- Wear protective eyewear.
- Reduce the pressure: cover the coolant expansion tank cap with a suitable towel and carefully open.
-- If necessary, fill the coolant to the upper edge of the red marking -1-.
-- Extract excess coolant.
Attach the seal on the cap of the coolant expansion tank
-- Close the cap -3-.
-- Then, guide the seal -1- through the holes in the cap -3- and the coolant hose connection -2-.
Condition
- The seal must be applied when the vehicle was previously equipped with a seal.
