-- The bracket -arrow- must be turned so that the longer side faces upward, as shown.

Procedure

-- If the transmission is being removed for service, disable the ATF pump and drain the hydraulic pressure reservoir. Refer to ATF PUMP, DEACTIVATING AND DRAINING THE HYDRAULIC PUMP RESERVOIR .

-- Switch the ignition off.

-- Bring the front wheels into the straight-ahead position and remove. Refer to WHEELS AND TIRES .

-- Remove the engine cover. Refer to ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING - 2.0L , ENGINE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING - 3.0L .

-- Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Remove the subframe crossbrace. Refer to SUBFRAME CROSSBRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the front exhaust pipe. Refer to OVERVIEW - MUFFLER - 2.0L , OVERVIEW - MUFFLER - 3.0L .

2.0L TFSI with Particulate Filter

-- Remove the emissions control module. Refer to [For engine(s) DPAA] Emissions Control System .

-- Remove the bolt from the catalytic converter bracket.

Continuation for All Vehicles

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and free up the parking lock emergency release cable -1-.

-- Remove the bolts -2 through 5- connecting the engine to the transmission that are accessible from above.

AWD Vehicles

-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Continuation for All Vehicles

-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear and then push together. Refer to STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- for the coolant pipe for the transmission.

-- Support the engine in the installation position. Refer to ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION (2.0L) , ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION (3.0L) .

-- Loosen the hose clamps -1 and 2- and then disconnect and remove the coolant hoses with Hose Clamps - Up To 25mm:3094  .

-- Remove the subframe shield -arrow- under the right and left drive axle. Refer to SUBFRAME SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the six bolts -arrow- for the flywheel -1- while turning the crankshaft 60° further in the direction of engine rotation.

Vehicles with 4-Cylinder Engine

-- Remove the three bolts -arrow- for the flywheel -1- while turning the crankshaft 120° further in the direction of engine rotation.

Continuation for All Vehicles

-- Remove the right drive axle heat shield. Refer to DRIVE AXLE HEAT SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the left and right drive axle from the transmission flange shaft. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the bolt -2- and move the coolant hose to the side.

-- Disconnect the connectors:

1 -  For the Parking Lock Solenoid -N486-

2 -  For the Transmission Control Module -J217-

3 -  For the Transmission Electric Pump 2 -V553-

Vehicles with 1.4L TFSI/3.0L TDI Engine

-- Insert the Strut Strut:T40335  into the left and right sides of the subframe. If necessary, adjust the brace at the knurled handle -1-.

-- Secure the left and right brace with a splint -arrow-.

• Ignore Locating Pins for Steering Box Locating Pins for Steering Box:T40334  .

-- Support the steering gear -2- with a foam mat -1- placed between it and the Engine and Gearbox Jack:VAS6931  .

-- Remove the Locating Pins for Steering Box Locating Pins for Steering Box:T40334  on the left and right side.

-- Lower the steering gear and push slightly forward.

-- Remove the bolts -6 through 10- that connect the transmission to the engine.

-- Position the Engine and Gearbox Jack:VAS6931  -1- with the prepared Gearbox Support:T40173A  -2- on the bottom on the transmission using the Tensioning Strap:T10523  -3-, as shown in the illustration.

-- Remove the tunnel crossmember. Refer to TUNNEL CROSSMEMBER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Use the Torque Wrench 1332 Insert - Ring Wrench - 16mm:VAG1332/14  and Torque Wrench Adapter:VAS6948  to gradually remove the last bolt -1- connecting the starter to the transmission, and push the transmission farther away from the engine at the same time.

-- Bring the steering gear back into the installation position and secure with the Locating Pins for Steering Box Locating Pins for Steering Box:T40334  .

Carefully lower the Engine and Gearbox Jack:VAS6931  ; while doing so, pay attention to the wires and the SCR line.

All Vehicles, Excluding 3.0L TDI Engine

-- Remove the bolt -1- using the Torque Wrench 1332 Insert - Ring Wrench - 16mm:VAG1332/14  and the Torque Wrench Adapter:VAS6948  .

-- Remove the starter slightly from the transmission and leave it in the installation position.

-- Remove remaining transmission to engine connecting bolts -6 through 10-.

-- Position the Engine and Gearbox Jack:VAS6931  -1- with the prepared Gearbox Support:T40173A  -2- on the bottom on the transmission using the Tensioning Strap:T10523  -3-, as shown in the illustration.

-- Remove the tunnel crossmember. Refer to TUNNEL CROSSMEMBER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Push the transmission off the engine and lower it carefully, using the Engine and Gearbox Jack:VAS6931  , while doing so pay attention to wires and the selective catalytic reduction line.
