Transmission, Removing, A4/A5 With 3.0L TDI Engine Gen I

- Tensioning Strap:T10038

- Locating Pins for Steering Box:T40334

Gearbox Support:T40173 , Preparing:
-- The bracket -arrow- must be turned so that the longer side faces upward, as shown.
Procedure
-- Position the front wheels so they are in the straight-ahead position.
-- Switch the ignition off.
-- Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .
-- Remove the front exhaust pipe. Refer to FRONT MUFFLER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING - 2.0 or FRONT MUFFLER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING - 2.9, 3.0 .
-- Remove the emissions control module. Refer to the appropriate Service Information .
-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to the appropriate Service Information .
-- Remove the subframe crossbrace. Refer to SUBFRAME CROSSBRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear and the push together. Refer to STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the ATF cooler. Refer to ATF COOLER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and free up the parking lock emergency release cable -1-.
-- Remove the bolts -2 through 5- connecting the engine to the transmission that are accessible from above.
-- Support the engine in the installation position. Refer to ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION - 2.0 or ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION - 2.9, 3.0 .
-- Remove the front wheels. Refer to WHEEL, CHANGING .
-- Remove the left and right nuts -1 and 3-, and remove the drive axle cover -2-.
-- Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission in direction of -arrow-.
Risk of Damaging the Engine by the Timing Mechanism Skipping
- Turn the engine only in the direction of engine rotation.
-- Turn the crankshaft with the :T40263 and :T40314 in direction of -arrow-.
-- Remove the six torque converter -1- bolts -arrow- while turning the crankshaft an additional 60° in the direction of engine rotation.
-- Remove the left and right drive axle heat shield. Refer to DRIVE AXLE HEAT SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the left and right drive axle from the transmission flange shaft. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the bolt -arrow- and move the coolant hose to the side.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and move the right coolant pipe to the side.
Risk of Destroying Due to Electrostatic Charge
- Do not touch the connector terminals.
- Touch a grounded object (for example the hoist) and discharge any static electricity.
-- Turn the twist lock counter-clockwise in direction of -arrow- and disconnect the connector -1- from the transmission.
-- Loosen the retainer, push the release downward and disconnect the connectors -3 and 4- from the Power Steering Control Module -J500-.
-- Free up the wiring duct -2- for the wires on the steering gear -1-.
-- Insert the :T40335 on the left and right side in the subframe. If necessary, adjust the brace at the knurled handle -1-.
-- Secure the left and right brace with a splint -arrow-.
- Ignore :T40334 .
There Is a Risk of Damaging the Boots
- Do not grab the boots when removing the steering gear.
-- Support the steering gear -2- with a foam mat -1- placed between it and the :VAS6931 .
-- Remove the :T40334 on the left and right side.
-- Lower the steering gear and push slightly forward.
-- Remove the bolts -1 and 11-.
-- Remove the starter slightly from the transmission and leave it in the installation position.
-- Bring the steering gear back into the installation position and secure with the :T40334 .
-- Remove remaining transmission to engine connecting bolts -6 through 10-.
Risk of Leaks by Damaging the Oil Pan
- The :T40173 must not be set on the ATF pan.
-- Prepare the :VAS6931 with the :T40173 and place at the bottom of the transmission and secure using the tensioning strap -1-.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- for the tunnel crossmember.
- For clarity, the :T40173 is not illustrated.
-- Push the transmission off the engine and lower it carefully using the :VAS6931 while doing so pay attention to wires and the selective catalytic reduction line.
