Transmission, Removing, A4/A5 With 2.9L/3.0L TFSI Engine

- Hose Clamps - Up To 25mm:3094
- Torque Wrench 1332 Insert - Ring Wrench - 16mm:VAG1332/14
- Engine and Gearbox Jack:VAS6931
- Torque Wrench Adapter:VAS6948
- Gearbox Support:T40173
- Wrench - 21mm:T40263

- Tensioning Strap:T10038
- Strut:T40335
Gearbox Support:T40173 , Preparing:
-- The bracket -arrow- must be turned so that the longer side faces upward, as shown.
Procedure
-- Position the front wheels so they are in the straight-ahead position.
-- Switch the ignition off.
-- Disconnect the battery ground cable. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .
-- Remove the left and right front muffler. Refer to FRONT MUFFLER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING - 2.0 or FRONT MUFFLER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING - 2.9, 3.0 .
-- Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to CATALYTIC CONVERTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING - 2.0 or CATALYTIC CONVERTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING - 2.9, 3.0 .
-- Remove the bolts -2 through 5- connecting the engine to the transmission that are accessible from above.
-- Support the engine in the installation position. Refer to ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION - 2.0 or ENGINE, SUPPORTING IN INSTALLATION POSITION - 2.9, 3.0 .
-- Remove the front wheels. Refer to WHEEL, CHANGING .
-- Drain the coolant. Refer to COOLING SYSTEM/COOLANT - 2.0 or COOLANT, DRAINING AND FILLING - 2.9, 3.0 .
-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to the appropriate service Information .
-- Remove the subframe crossbrace. Refer to SUBFRAME CROSSBRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear and the push together. Refer to STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and push the ATF cooler with the connected hoses -1, 2 and 4- slightly to the side.
-- Loosen the bolts -arrows- and move the coolant pipe -1- to the side.
-- Loosen the bolt -arrow- and let the coolant pipe -1- hang.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and free up the parking lock emergency release cable -1-.
-- Remove the left and right nuts -1 and 3-, and remove the drive axle cover -2-.
-- Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission in direction of -arrow-.
Risk of damaging the engine by the timing mechanism skipping.
- Turn the engine only in the direction of engine rotation.
-- Turn the crankshaft with the :T40263 and :T40314 in direction of -arrow-.
-- Remove the six torque converter -1- bolts -arrow- while turning the crankshaft an additional 60° in the direction of engine rotation.
-- Remove the left and right drive axle heat shield. Refer to DRIVE AXLE HEAT SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the left and right drive axle from the transmission flange shaft. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Vehicles with 2.9L TFSI Engine
-- Loosen the hose clamp -arrow- and remove the coolant hose.
All Vehicles
-- Free up the wiring harness.
Risk of destroying due to electrostatic charge.
- Do not touch the connector terminals.
- Touch a grounded object (for example the hoist) and discharge any static electricity.
-- Turn the twist lock counter-clockwise -arrow- and disconnect the connector -1- from the transmission.
-- Remove the bolt -1- with the :VAG1332/14 and the :VAS6948 .
-- Remove remaining transmission to engine connecting bolts -6 through 10-.
Risk of Leaks by Damaging the Oil Pan
- The :T40173 must not be set on the ATF pan.
-- Prepare the :VAS6931 with the :T40173 and place at the bottom of the transmission and secure using the tensioning strap -1-.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- for the tunnel crossmember.
- For clarity, the :T40173 is not illustrated.
-- Remove the transmission from the engine, while removing the starter bolt completely.
-- Carefully lower the :VAS6931 while paying attention to the wires at the same time.
