SUBFRAME With Steering Gear, Removing And Installing: Removing
- During installation, all cable ties must be installed at the same location.
Before starting work:
-- Versions with coil springs: determine the curb weight position. Refer to VEHICLES WITH COIL SPRINGS, CHECKING THE CURB WEIGHT POSITION FOR AXLE ALIGNMENT .
-- Versions with air suspension: determine the standard vehicle height. Refer to STANDARD VEHICLE HEIGHT FOR AXLE ALIGNMENT ON VEHICLES WITH AIR SUSPENSION, CHECKING .
-- Secure the subframe. Refer to SUBFRAME, SECURING .
-- Free up the wiring duct -4- on the right coolant pipe and on the subframe.
-- Remove the nut -2- and bolt -3- and press the right coolant pipe back slightly on the subframe.
-- Equipped on some models: remove the bolts -arrows- and push the left coolant pipe to the side.
-- Remove the end panel bolts -arrows-.
-- Remove screw -1- and disconnect harness connector -2-.
-- Remove the connector -2- from the bracket and disconnect it.
-- Remove the nut -1- and free up the ground wires.
-- Free up the wires to the subframe.
-- Equipped on some models: remove the left and right bolt -1- for the support bearing.
-- Remove the left and right bolts -arrow- for the subframe shield.
-- Versions with 3.0L TDI engine: remove the nuts -arrows- and free up the Transmission Fluid Cooling Valve - N509-.
-- If required, free up the wiring harness and the SCR delivery line.
There is a risk of damaging the joints on the upper control arm with a load that is too heavy.
- Support wheel bearing housing.
-- Engage the left and right : 10-222A/20 to the body, and tie up the wheel bearing housing as shown using the : T10038
-- To protect the threads, remove the nut -arrow- on the left and right side from the tie rod end joint pin until it is flush with the joint pin threads.
- To prevent damage to the ball joint puller, both pry arms on the pull must be parallel to each other when the most force is applied.
Abruptly loosening the tie rod end when removing increases the risk of injury.
It is possible that parts of the body may become bruised.
- Secure the tool with the engine and gearbox jack placed underneath.
-- Remove the left and right tie rod end with the : VAS251805 from the wheel bearing housing.
-- Then remove the nut. Use a 6 mm inner hex socket to counterhold at the joint pin if necessary.
Equipped on Some Models:
-- Disconnect the left and right connector -3- for the level control system sensor and free up the wire.
-- Remove the nut -2- and free up the coupling rod.
Continuation for All:
-- Clean the steering gear and the subframe near the boot.
-- Open the spring clamp -3- using the : VAS6362 .
-- Remove the clamp -1- and remove the boot -2- outward from the steering gear.
-- Disconnect the left and right control arm threaded connections -1 and 3-.
-- Pivot the control arm toward the front.
TIP:
To remove the bolt -1 -, push the steering all the way to the left or right.
-- To protect the threads, remove the nut -arrow- on the left and right from the guide link joint pin just until it is flush with the joint pin threads.
- To prevent damage to the ball joint puller, both pry arms on the pull must be parallel to each other when the most force is applied.
Abruptly loosening the ball joint when removing increases the risk of injury.
It is possible that parts of the body may become bruised.
- Secure the tool with the engine and gearbox jack placed underneath.
-- Remove the guide link joint pin from the conical seat using the : VAS251809 with : VAS251809/1 . Do not damage the CV boot while doing this.
-- Remove the nut by counterholding at the ball joint with a TX40 socket if necessary.
-- Free up the guide link on the wheel bearing housing.
-- Remove the left and right nut -3- and the bolt -1- for the coupling rod -2-.
-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear and then push together. Refer to STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
TIP:
For vehicles with a 3.0L TFSI engine, use a 14 mm internal multi-point socket -1- with corner extension -2- to remove the left engine mount bolt.
-- Equipped on some models: free up the SCR delivery line -1- on the subframe.
-- Remove the left and right bolt -2- and lower the subframe with the : VAS6931 .
- Make sure there is enough clearance for the wires and coolant hoses when lowering the subframe.
