General Repair Instructions and Safety Precautions

WARNING:

ABS is basically maintenance-free. Specialized knowledge is required to carry out service or repair work on this system. Failure to read and follow the safety precautions that follow may result in system damage and loss of vehicle safety.

The ABS control module connector must be disconnected before carrying out any welding with electrical welding equipment.
The temperature to which the ABS control module is subjected during painting work must not exceed 90°C (194°F).
If the battery has been disconnected or removed, the battery terminals must be properly tightened after re-installing the battery.
Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery before removing the ABS hydraulic unit.
After finishing any work that requires opening the brake hydraulic system, bleed the system BRAKE FLUID, BLEEDING AND CHARGING .
In addition, carry out a high- and low-pressure test of brake system HIGH AND LOW PRESSURE, CHECKING .
After work on the brake system not directly involving any parts of the ABS, it is sufficient to carry out a simple operational check. Such work includes replacing brake pads, brake discs, brake cables and parts of the parking brake.
The car should be road tested as an operational check, which should include driving the car at a speed of 60 km/h (38 mph) for a period of 30 seconds. If the anti-lock brake system is in proper order, the brake warning light and the ABS warning light must not come on. If the car is also equipped with the traction control system (ASR), the traction control indicator light also must not come on.
If any work is carried out on the ABS hydraulic unit, the ABS control module, the ABS wheel speed sensors or the wiring harness, or if components are replaced (e.g. when repairing brake lines after an accident), the entire anti-lock system must be checked. The On Board Diagnostic (On Board Diagnostic) program must be carried out, especially the test of operation and correct connections, Electrical test, test steps 13 to 16.
If parts are replaced, install only genuine factory-made, preformed brake lines. Brake lines not available as direct replacements should be shop-made from tubing commercially available in meter lengths. Make sure that brake lines have proper clearance.
Do not drive the car with the test equipment connected SAFETY PRECAUTIONS AND TROUBLESHOOTING .
During a final road test, make sure that a controlled brake application is carried out at least once.
