Crankshaft, Measuring Radial Clearance

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

• Plastigauge^®

Procedure 

• Use the old bolts for radial clearance measurement.

-- Remove the bearing cap and clean the bearing journals.

-- Place the Plastigauge^® over the entire width of the bearing journal or into the bearing shells.

• The Plastigauge^® must rest in the center of the bearing shell.

-- Position the bearing cap and tighten it an additional turn; do not turn the crankshaft. Refer to Figure.

-- Reinstall the bearing cap.

-- Compare the width of the Plastigauge^® with the measuring scale.

Radial clearance: 

• New: 0.021 to 0.036 mm.
• Wear limit: 0.08 mm.

-- Replace the bolts for the final assembly.
