Engine, Removing, AUDI Q7/Q8

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

Procedure

-- Before starting the procedures, determine the curb weight position (refer to WHEEL BEARING IN CURB WEIGHT POSITION, LIFTING VEHICLES WITH COIL SPRING or determine the control position (refer to WHEEL BEARING AT STANDARD VEHICLE HEIGHT, LIFTING VEHICLES WITH AIR SUSPENSION ).

-- Position the wheels so that they are straight.

-- Disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

CAUTION:

The cooling system is under pressure when the engine is warm. There is a risk of scalding due to hot steam and hot coolant.

Scalding the skin and other parts of the body is possible.

- Wear safety gloves.

- Wear protective eyewear.

- Reduce the pressure by covering the coolant expansion tank cap with a cloth and carefully opening it.

-- Open the cover -1- for the coolant expansion tank by releasing the catch -arrow-.

-- Remove the front wheels. Refer to WHEELS AND TIRES .

-- Remove the front right wheel housing liner front section. Refer to OVERVIEW - FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER .

-- Loosen the left front wheel housing liner in the front area and push slightly toward the rear. Refer to OVERVIEW - FRONT WHEEL HOUSING LINER .

-- Remove the noise insulations. Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .

-- Remove the lower longitudinal member. Refer to LOWER LONGITUDINAL MEMBER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Place the Shop Crane - Drip Tray:VAS 6208  underneath.

-- Lift the clamp -arrow- and remove the coolant hose from the radiator and drain the coolant.

-- Lift the clamp -arrow- and remove the coolant hose.

-- Hold the coolant hose downward and allow the coolant to drain.

-- Open the heat shield boot.

-- Loosen the hose clamp -arrow-, remove the coolant hose from the Coolant Recirculation Pump -V50-, and allow the coolant to drain.

-- Disconnect the connector -1- from the Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor on Radiator Outlet -G83-.

-- Open the left and right clip -arrow B-.

-- Remove the air filter upper section -1- in the center toward the rear from the ball pins -arrow A- and disengage from the air filter lower section (example illustration).

-- Remove the air filter upper section.

-- Disconnect the connector -3- for the Air Filter Bypass Door Valve -N275- and free up the wire.

-- Loosen the hose clamp -2- and remove the air duct pipe.

-- Disconnect the vacuum hose -4-.

-- Release the retainer -arrow- and remove the oil filler tube -1- upward from the air filter lower section.

-- Pay attention to the water drain hose -arrow- when removing the air filter housing.

-- Release the retainer -arrow A- and remove the air ducts -1- from the air filter lower section -2-.

-- Remove the front air filter lower section from the ball pin upward -B arrows- and then remove the rear mount toward the front -C arrows-.

-- Release the retainer -arrow- and open the E-box.

-- Remove the nut -2- and free up the B+ wire.

-- Free up the wire -1- on the wiring duct.

-- Remove the bolt -2- and free up the ground wire.

-- Remove the bolt -3- and nut -4- and free up the wiring duct.

-- Disconnect the fuel hose -1-. Refer to CONNECTOR COUPLINGS, DISCONNECTING .

-- Loosen the hose clamp -2-, disconnect the EVAP system hose, and free it up from the air duct pipe.

-- Seal off any open lines and connections with plugs that are thoroughly cleaned from the Engine Bung Set:VAS 6122  .

-- If installed, disconnect the connector -3- for the Fuel Tank Pressure Sensor 2 -G850-.

-- Open the heat shield boot.

-- Loosen the hose clamp -arrow- and remove the coolant hose.

Vehicles with a particulate filter:

-- Disconnect the connector -2- for the Particulate Filter Differential Temperature Sensor -GX41-.

-- If the engine and transmission are to be separated: remove the connector from the bracket and free up the wires.

-- Disconnect the connector -3- for the Particulate Filter Differential Pressure Sensor -G1037-.

-- If the engine and transmission are to be separated, remove the bolt -1- and free up the differential pressure sensor.

-- Disconnect the connector -2- for Oxygen Sensor 1 after Catalytic Converter -GX7- -item 1- (example illustration).

-- If installed, disconnect the connector -1- for the Tank Ventilation Pressure Sensor 1 -G950-, then free up the wire.

-- Lift the clamps -1 and 2- and remove the coolant hoses.

-- Loosen the hose clamp -3- and remove the coolant hose.

-- Loosen the screw-type clamp -arrow- and remove the air duct hose from the Throttle Valve Control Module -GX3-.

-- Seal off any open lines and connections with plugs that are thoroughly cleaned from the Engine Bung Set:VAS 6122  .

-- Remove the brake booster vacuum hose -arrow- from the plenum chamber bulkhead.

-- Disconnect the connector -2-.

-- Release the catches -arrows-, remove the Engine Control Module -J623- -item 3- and set it to the side.

-- Disconnect the connector -2-.

-- Release the retainer -arrow- to remove the connector to the side (example image).

-- Free up the engine wiring harness and set it on the engine.

-- Remove the front muffler nut -2- that is accessible from the top.

-- Remove the nuts -1 and 3- and bolt -4- for the front muffler.

-- Remove the front muffler bolts -arrows-.

-- Remove the nuts -2- and bolts -1 and 3- for the front muffler.

CAUTION:

Risk of injury due to flying soot particles.

Irritation and injury to skin and eyes possible.

- Wear protective eyewear.

- Wear safety gloves.

-- Loosen the clamping sleeve -arrows- and push toward the rear.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging the coupling due to improper handling.

- Coupling must not be bent more than 10°.

- Do not load the coupling on the cable.

-- Remove the front muffler.

-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to DRIVESHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Loosen the hose clamp -arrow- and remove the air duct hose at the right from the turbocharger.

-- Seal off any open lines and connections with plugs that are thoroughly cleaned from the Engine Bung Set:VAS 6122  .

-- Remove the nut -4- and free up the ground wire.

-- Remove the bolt -2-.

-- Disconnect the connectors -1 and 3- and free up the wires.

-- Remove the subframe. Refer to SUBFRAME WITH STEERING GEAR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Detach the left and right drive axles from the transmission. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the A/C compressor from the bracket and tie it up on the left side. Refer to A/C COMPRESSOR, REMOVING AND INSTALLING ON BRACKET .

CAUTION:

Risk of destroying due to electrostatic discharge.

- Do not touch the connector terminals by hand.

- Touch a ground (for example the hoist) and discharge the static electricity.

-- Turn the twist lock counter-clockwise -arrow- and disconnect the connector -1- from the transmission.

-- Free up the wiring harness on the transmission.

-- Release the retainers -A arrows- and slide the sleeve -1- on the emergency release cable in the -direction of the arrow B-.

-- Disengage the rear section of the emergency release cable from the front section of the emergency release cable -arrow C-.

If the engine should be separated from the transmission:

-- Loosen the hose clamp -3- and remove the coolant hose.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and push the ATF cooler slightly to the side with the ATF pipe/hose lines -1 and 4- attached.

-- Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission -arrow-.

-- To loosen the torque converter bolts, use the Wrench - 21mm:T40263  , Adapter:T40314  and 24 mm socket to counterhold the crankshaft.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging the engine by the timing mechanism skipping.

- Only let the engine turn in the direction of engine rotation.

-- Remove the six bolts -arrow- for the torque converter on the drive plate -1-.

-- Turn the crankshaft an additional 60° in the direction of engine rotation.

-- Equip the Scissor Lift Table:VAS 6131B  as follows:

Table Coordinates Components from :VAS 6131/10  , adapter from Scissor Lift Table - A8 Set - Mounting :VAS 6131/11-4  , Scissor Lift Table - A6 Set - Mounting Pins:VAS 6131/12-2  and the Threaded Spindle from Scissor Lift Table - Q7 Set :VAS 6131/13

-- Secure the mounting elements to the scissor lift table by hand.

-- Position the Scissor Lift Table:VAS 6131 B  horizontally.

-- Guide the Scissor Lift Table:VAS 6131 B  under the engine/transmission assembly.

-- Install the mounting elements from the Scissor Lift Table - Audi Set :VAS 6131/10  as shown on the tunnel crossmember.

-- Pay attention that the right threaded spindle is completely installed.

-- Position the mounting elements from :VAS 6131/10  , adapter from Scissor Lift Table - A8 Set - Mounting : VAS 6131/11-4  , Scissor Lift Table - A6 Set - Mounting Pins: VAS 6131/12-2  and the Threaded Spindle -1- from the Threaded Spindle from Scissor Lift Table - Q7 Set:VAS 6131/13  to the left and right as shown.

-- Install the bolt -arrow- for the engine mount all the way on the adapter.

-- Rotate the remaining mounting element spindles upward until all the mounting pins come in contact with the mounting points.

-- Tighten the mounting element base plates to 20 Nm on the Scissor Lift Table:VAS 6131B  .

-- Disengage the Engine Support Bridge - Spindle:10-222A/11 

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- on the tunnel crossmember.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging the lines and hoses, as well as the engine compartment by lowering the engine/transmission assembly.

- Make sure all connections between the engine, transmission and body have been disconnected.

- Carefully lower and guide the engine/transmission assembly out of the engine compartment.

-- Lower the Scissor Lift Table:VAS 6131B  with the engine/transmission assembly and remove from under the vehicle.
