Brake Fluid Reservoir And Master Cylinder Rubber Plug
Vehicles with steel brake master cylinders (manufactured by Girling) have a brake fluid transfer tube at the rear connection to the fluid reservoir.
If brake fluid is leaking at the rear brake fluid reservoir connection to the master cylinder, check the installation of the rubber plug at this connection.
Refer to the illustrations that follow (master cylinder and rubber plug shown partially cut-away), and the procedure for correct installation of the rubber plug.
Replacing
-- Coat rubber plug with brake fluid on the inside only.
-- Insert rubber plug and make sure plug extension slides over end of transfer tube (arrow).
Do not use a tool or instrument with a point to press in rubber plug. Sharp objects may puncture the base of the plug.
-- Use round-headed bolt or other suitable tool to press plug fully onto transfer tube.
When correctly installed, the plug extension will protrude (dimension -a-) by approx. 1.0 mm (.039 in.) from the master cylinder housing.
When approx. 1.0 mm (.039 in.) of the plug extends from the housing, the offset -A- inside the housing is correct and no leakage will occur.
