Rear Suspension Overview, Without Stabilizer Bar: Notes

CAUTION:

Threaded connections on the rear suspension, used to mount the bonded rubber bushings, must only be tightened with the vehicle resting on its wheels.

WARNING:

Before moving a car from which the driveshaft has been removed, first install an outer joint in place of the driveshaft-otherwise the wheel bearing will be damaged.

NOTE:

Do not attempt to weld or straighten rear wheel suspension components.

  1. Gasket
    • Always replace
    • Remove protective backing and install on CV joint
  2. Bolt
    • M8: 45 Nm (33 ft lb)
    • M10: 80 Nm (59 ft lb)
  3. Driveshaft
    • Removing and installing DRIVESHAFT 
    • Left and right sides identical
    • Repairing DRIVESHAFT 
    • Before removing driveshaft, pull ABS wheel speed sensor out slightly
  4. Suspension strut
  5. Self-locking nut
    • Always replace
    • 25 Nm (18 ft lb)
  6. Crossmember
    WARNING:

    When fastening the crossmember, make sure that the four mounting holes are aligned as concentrically as possible with the studs before aligning the rear axle.

  7. Self-locking nut
    • Always replace
    • 40 Nm (30 ft lb)
  8. Transverse link ball joint
    • Left and right sides different
    • Note angle position at joint
    • Ensure uniform installation depth
  9. Nut
    • 60 Nm (44 ft lb)
  10. Transverse link threaded sleeve
  11. Bolt
  12. Transverse link bushing end
    • Left and right sides identical
    • Ensure uniform installation depth
  13. Self-locking nut
    • Always replace
    • 200 Nm (148 ft lb)
  14. Bolt and washer assembly
    • Always replace
    • Tighten to 200 Nm (148 ft lb) plus additional 1/4-turn (90°)
    • Only loosen and tighten with vehicle resting on wheels
  15. Flanged nut
    • Always replace
    • 110 Nm (81 ft lb)
  16. Self-locking nut
    • Always replace
    • Tighten to 170 Nm (125 ft lb) plus additional 3/4-turn (135°)
    • Clean threads of adhesive residue in wheel bearing housing with -M14- x 1.5 screw tap
    • Only tighten with vehicle resting on wheels
  17. Support
    • Cross points up when installed
    • Check toe and camber after removing and installing
  18. Washer
  19. Trapezoidal arm
    • Check toe and camber after replacing
    • Check toe after removing and installing
  20. Bolt
  21. Self-locking nut
    • Always replace
    • 90 Nm (66 ft lb)
    • Only tighten with vehicle resting on wheels
  22. Wheel bearing housing
    • Removing and installing WHEEL BEARING HOUSING 
    • When replacing the wheel bearing housing, install sealing collar, Part No. 893 927 809 on ABS wheel speed sensor
  23. Bonded rubber bushing
  24. Washer
  25. Self-locking bolt
    • Always replace
    • Tighten to 170 Nm (125 ft lb) plus additional 3/4-turn (135°)
    • Clean threads of adhesive residue in wheel bearing housing with -M14- x 1.5 screw tap
    • Only tighten with vehicle resting on wheels
  26. Bolt
  27. ABS wheel speed sensor
    • Pull out to remove
    • Before installing, grease all around with brake cylinder paste and press in by hand to stop
  28. Clamping sleeve
    • Before installing in wheel bearing housing, grease all around with brake cylinder paste
    • Press into wheel bearing housing to stop
  29. Bracket
    • For ABS wheel speed sensor wire
