Heated Seats, Troubleshooting

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

NOTE:

Always refer to appropriate wiring diagram.

Test Conditions

WARNING:

DO NOT damage, enlarge or bend connector terminals or cavities by forcing probes into them when performing electrical checks. Use connector test kit VW 1594 to make the necessary electrical connections.

A
                       
  Power Supply at Heated Seat Element Switch Connector, Checking  
  -- Remove heated seat element control switch (driver or passenger side).-- Remove connector from control switch.-- Set multimeter to measure voltage and connect red test lead to terminal 4 of connector and black test lead to ground (GND).
  • Must read approximately 12 volts.
-- Connect red test lead to terminal 4 and black test lead to terminal 6 of connector.
  • Must read approximately 12 volts.
-- Connect red test lead to terminal 1 and black test lead to terminal 6 of connector.-- Switch ignition ON.
  • Must read approximately 12 volts.
-- Switch ignition OFF.-- Connect red test lead to terminal 5 and black test lead to terminal 6 of connector.-- Switch ignition ON.
  • Must read approximately 12 volts
 
  One or more specified values NOT OK All specified values OK

  -- Check and repair wiring according to wiring diagram, or -- Check continuity of heated seat circuit breaker -S79-
  • Located in auxiliary relay panel I (plenum chamber, left side), position A5
-- Replace circuit breaker if necessary

  Seat Temperature Sensor, Checking Continuity  
  -- Set multimeter to measure resistance (Ω), and connect test leads between terminals 3 and 6 of plug connector for heated seat element control switch.
  • Must read approximately 10 K Ω at ambient temperature of 20°C (68°F).
Note: Heated seat element and temperature sensor are one unit.

  -- Disconnect 6-point connector (green) from under front of seat.-- Unclip connector from bracket on seat frame.-- Connect multimeter test leads between terminals 2 and 4 of 6-point connector.
  • Must read approximately 10 K Ω at ambient temperature of 20°C (68°F).
 
  Specified values NOT OK Specified value OK  
                       
  -- Replace heated seat element.     -- Check and repair wiring according to wiring diagram.

  Heated Seat, Checking Continuity to Seat  
  -- Set multimeter to Ohm range and connect test leads between terminals 2 and 6 of the disconnected harness connector for the heated seat element control switch (driver or passenger side).
  • Must read approximately 2.4 Ω
 
  Specified values NOT OK Specified value OK  
                       
  -- Check and repair wiring according to wiring diagram, or -- Check continuity to individual front seat heater elements (seat bottom, backrest), rear seat elements and switch. Refer to HEATED SEAT CIRCUIT BREAKER, CHECKING .     End
