Frequency Display, Troubleshooting

When the Auto-Check system is not being used and the radio is on, the radio station frequency or the tape player in-use symbol will be displayed in the Auto-Check display.

Example:

89.5 = Radio frequency indicator

∞ = Stereo/mono indicator

FM2.4 = Station select button indicator

TAPE = Tape operation

: VAG1598/20  test adapter

If frequency display does not work

                               
-- Remove instrument cluster INSTRUMENT CLUSTER -- Remove 14-point instrument cluster connector and connect : VAG1598/20  test adapter (from connector test kit VW 1594) to harness connector-- Switch ignition ON-- Switch radio ON-- Set digital multimeter (Fluke 83 or equivalent) to volt range-- Connect multimeter between Ground (GND) and:
  • Terminal 3: must be approximately 5 volts
  • Terminal 4: must be approximately 5 volts
  • Terminal 8: must be approximately 0.05 - 0.1 volts
Voltage readings OK Voltage readings NOT OK
                               
  -- Replace display unit   -- Check for open circuit in wiring according to wiring diagram, repair as necessary-- Check radio, replace if necessary
