Camshaft Timing Chain, Removing From Camshafts, Cylinder Bank 2 (Left): Removing

There are required preliminary procedures if the camshaft timing chain should be removed from the camshafts when the engine is installed. Refer to CAMSHAFT TIMING CHAIN, REMOVING FROM CAMSHAFTS  .

-- Remove the cylinder bank 2 upper timing chain cover. Refer to UPPER TIMING CHAIN COVERS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the upper air duct pipe. Refer to AIR DUCT PIPE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the vacuum pump. Refer to VACUUM PUMP, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Using the Wrench - 21mm:T40263  and Adapter:T40314  , turn the crankshaft -arrow- until the vibration damper is at "TDC". (shown on a 3.0L engine).

• The marks -1 and 2- on the camshaft adjusters must align with the corresponding locating tabs -arrows- on the camshaft housing. If necessary turn the crankshaft an additional turn.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the plugs -2-.

-- Push the oil dipstick tube -1- slightly to the side.

-- Tighten the Adapter:T40331/2  on the camshaft housing to 9 Nm.

• It must be easy to insert the Camshaft Lock:T40331/1  .

• Do not use a hammer to install the camshaft positioning tool.

-- Insert the prepared Camshaft Positioning Tool:T40331/1  all the way in the camshafts. If necessary slightly turn the crankshaft.

• The Camshaft Positioning Tool:T40331/5  engages as shown in the upper asymmetrical groove -1- on the exhaust camshaft.
• The Camshaft Positioning Tool:T40331/6  engages as shown in the flattened section -2- on the intake camshaft.

-- Tighten the bolts -arrows- to 9 Nm.

The Counterholder:T90001  can only be inserted in one position for this the notch -1- and the mark -2- on the camshaft adjuster must align to each other.

-- To counterhold on the affected camshaft adjuster, position the Counterholder:T90001  with Socket:VAS261001  , and loosen the control valve -1- with the Socket E24:T90000  .

-- For reinstallation mark the camshaft adjuster to the camshafts using paint.

• The notch -1- on the vibration damper almost perfectly aligns to the locating tab -2- on the belt pulley side sealing flange.

Procedure, if the Engine is NOT Removed Due to Preliminary Work.

-- Install the Camshaft Locating Tool:T40264/3  at the vibration damper opening all the way by hand into the belt pulley side sealing flange. If necessary, move the crankshaft back and forth slightly to center the bolt.

-- Remove the plug if it is still installed.

-- Install the Crankshaft Locking Pin:T40069  in the hole and tighten to 20 Nm. If necessary push the crankshaft slightly back and forth.

-- Turn back the guide rail -2- -arrow- and pistons from the chain tensioner -1- using the Locking Pins:T03006  .

TIP:

The piston is lubricated with oil and can only be pushed back slowly by applying constant pressure.

-- Remove the control valves -1 and 2- and remove both camshaft adjusters.
