Using Impact Wrenches

Using an impact wrench to remove nuts and bolts is generally permitted. Working on an open high-voltage battery is an exception. For this type of work, impact wrenches are generally not permitted.

During repair work, using impact wrenches to install nuts and bolts is permitted when the following conditions are observed. Electric and pneumatic impact wrenches are generally implied here.

Requirements:

• Only install bolts with locking fluid or self-locking nuts at a low speed.
• Use a suitable impact wrench with an adjustable speed and torque range.
• Use suitable wrench inserts near surfaces that are easily damaged. For example, use plastic-coated inserts for aluminum rims.
• Refer to the Natural Gas System - General Information repair Information when working near natural gas fuel systems.

Using:

• Position the bolts or nuts by hand.
• Use an impact wrench to screw in the bolts or nuts only until the bolt or nut head contacts the component surface, and then continue to turn using a torque wrench.
• Before removing the bolt or nut, the threaded pins must be cleaned.
