Shock Absorber Fork, Removing And Installing: Removing
Before starting work:
-- Versions with coil springs: determine the curb weight position. Refer to WHEEL BEARING IN CURB WEIGHT POSITION, LIFTING VEHICLES WITH COIL SPRING .
-- Versions with air suspension: determine the standard vehicle height. Refer to WHEEL BEARING AT STANDARD VEHICLE HEIGHT, LIFTING VEHICLES WITH AIR SUSPENSION .
-- Remove the front wheel. Refer to WHEELS AND TIRES .
-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the subframe shield and move it to the side. Refer to SUBFRAME SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- To protect the threads, remove the nut -arrow- from the tie rod end joint pin until it is flush with the joint pin threads.
There is a risk of injury from falling components.
- When pressing off, the tie rod end loosens abruptly from the wheel bearing housing. Place the Engine and Gearbox Jack:VAS 6931 for example underneath to secure.
There is a risk of damaging the ball joint puller.
- Make sure that both puller lever arms are parallel to each other when using maximum force.
-- Remove the tie rod end with the Ball Joint Splitter:VAS 251 805 from the wheel bearing housing.
-- Then remove the nut. Use a 6 mm inner hex socket to counterhold at the joint pin if necessary.
-- Remove the boot. Refer to BOOT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the nut -2- and free up the coupling rod for the vehicle level sensor.
-- Disconnect the threaded connections -1 and 3- for the control arm.
To remove the bolt -1-, push the steering all the way to the left or right.
-- Remove the nut -3- and the bolt -1- for the coupling rod -2-.
-- Disconnect the threaded connection -1-.
-- Insert the Spreader Tool:3424 into the slot in the shock absorber fork -arrow-.
There is a risk of damaging the ball joint.
- The upper control arm ball joint must not be pushed past the maximum bending point.
-- Remove the shock absorber fork downward from the shock absorber tube and remove, while pushing the wheel bearing housing carefully downward.
