Airbag Unit With Igniter, Removing And Installing: Removing

-- Position the steering wheel as far back and down as possible.

-- Pay attention to the safety precautions when working with pyrotechnic components. Refer to SAFETY PRECAUTIONS .

CAUTION:

Risk of airbag deployment.

Risk of injury.

- Check if the airbag indicator lamp turns on or blinks.

- If the airbag indicator lamp turns on or blinks, the DTC memory must be read.

- If >>short circuit to positive<< is a DTC memory entry, disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

- If there is a DTC memory entry, the Guided Fault Finding instructions on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester must always be followed.

- If the airbag indicator lamp does not turn on or blink, or there is no DTC memory entry with >>short circuit to positive<< : switch off the ignition, keep the ignition key outside of the vehicle and wait 10 seconds.

-- Turn the steering wheel clockwise 130° from the straight position.

-- Guide the Allen wrench -4-, (or another suitable tool), all the way into the opening for the locking bracket on the left side of the vehicle -2- on the rear side of the steering wheel. This must pierce through a thin foam wall on the inside of the steering wheel.

TIP:

To prevent damage to the wires do not use a flat-head screwdriver.

After the foam wall has been pierced, view the exact position of the locking bracket with a small mirror.

-- Release the locking bracket on the left side of the vehicle -2- by pulling the Allen wrench -4- upward with force in the direction of -arrow-.

-- When loosening the retainers -arrow A- and -B arrows-, press gently on the airbag in the direction of the steering column to release the tension on the respective retainer.

-- Pulling upward on the locking bracket -2- will loosen the retainer on the left side of the vehicle -arrow A- from the steering wheel.

-- Turn the steering wheel back 260° and repeat the procedure on the locking bracket on the right side of the vehicle -1-, while making sure that the airbag does not reengage on the loosened side.

CAUTION:

There is a risk of damaging the airbag unit if force is used.

- Never remove the airbag unit by pulling forcefully.

-- Loosen the remaining retainers -B arrows- on the steering wheel by pressing down the locking bracket on the right side of the vehicle -1-.

-- Bring the steering wheel back into the center (wheels are straight).

CAUTION:

Pyrotechnical components can deploy unintentionally.

Risk of injury.

- Discharge the static electricity: quickly touch the door striker.

-- Remove the driver side airbag -3- from the steering wheel slightly.

-- Pull out the connector lock -2- in direction of -arrow- and press it down, disconnect the connector -1-.

-- If equipped, disconnect the connector for the buttons in the steering wheel.

CAUTION:

Risk of airbag deployment.

There is a risk of injury.

- Store the airbag with the cushion facing upward.
