Instrument Panel, Removing And Installing: Removing

-- Pay attention to the safety precautions when working with pyrotechnic components. Refer to SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING WITH PYROTECHNIC COMPONENTS .

CAUTION:

Risk of airbag deployment.

Risk of injury.

- Check if the airbag indicator lamp turns on or blinks.

- If the airbag indicator lamp turns on or blinks, the DTC memory must be read.

- If >>short circuit to positive<< is a DTC memory entry, disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

- If there is a DTC memory entry, the Guided Fault Finding instructions on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester must always be followed.

- If the airbag indicator lamp does not turn on or blink, or there is no DTC memory entry with >>short circuit to positive<< : switch off the ignition, keep the ignition key outside of the vehicle and wait 10 seconds.

-- Note the information for the wire routing and attachment. Refer to LINE ROUTING AND SECURING .

-- Position the steering wheel as far back and down as possible.

-- Move the front seats all the way back and tilt backrests 45°.

-- Remove the driver side airbag unit. Refer to AIRBAG UNIT WITH IGNITER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the steering wheel. Refer to STEERING WHEEL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the upper steering column trim panel. Refer to UPPER STEERING COLUMN TRIM PANEL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the lower steering column trim panel. Refer to LOWER STEERING COLUMN TRIM PANEL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the steering column switch module. Refer to STEERING COLUMN SWITCH MODULE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the instrument panel side covers. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL SIDE COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the instrument panel side decorative trim. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL SIDE DECORATIVE TRIM, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the A-pillar upper trim panels. Refer to A-PILLAR UPPER TRIM PANEL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the Left and Right Front Treble Speakers Left Front Treble Speaker - R20- /Right Front Treble Speaker -R22-. Refer to LEFT FRONT TREBLE SPEAKER -R20- /RIGHT FRONT TREBLE SPEAKER -R22-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the Center Speaker -R208-. Refer to CENTER SPEAKER -R208-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- If equipped, remove the Center Speaker 2 -R219-. Refer to CENTER SPEAKER 2 -R219-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the light switch trim. Refer to LIGHT SWITCH TRIM, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the instrument panel cover on the driver side. Refer to DRIVER SIDE INSTRUMENT PANEL COVER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the instrument panel vent on the driver side. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL VENT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, DRIVER SIDE .

-- Remove the center instrument panel decorative trim. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL DECORATIVE TRIM, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, CENTER .

-- Remove the instrument cluster trim. Refer to INSTRUMENT CLUSTER TRIM, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the instrument cluster. Refer to OVERVIEW - INSTRUMENT CLUSTER .

-- Remove the glove compartment. Refer to GLOVE COMPARTMENT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the mount for the Information Electronics Control Module 1 -J794- and let it hang on the connected wires. Refer to COMPONENT LOCATION OVERVIEW - INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM .

-- Remove the upper instrument panel decorative trim on the front passenger side. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL DECORATIVE TRIM, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, UPPER FRONT PASSENGER SIDE .

-- Remove the Infotainment system display. Refer to COMPONENT LOCATION OVERVIEW - INFOTAINMENT SYSTEM .

-- Remove the center console. Refer to CENTER CONSOLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the lower instrument panel decorative trim on the front passenger side. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL DECORATIVE TRIM, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, LOWER FRONT PASSENGER SIDE .

-- Remove the instrument panel vent on the front passenger side. Refer to FRONT PASSENGER SIDE INSTRUMENT PANEL VENT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

CAUTION:

Pyrotechnical components can deploy unintentionally.

Risk of injury.

- Discharge the static electricity: quickly touch the door striker.

-- Release the connector lock -1- with a small flat-head screwdriver in the direction of -arrow-.

-- Disconnect the connectors -2, 3 and 4- from the Front Passenger Airbag Release Valve Igniter -N491- and Front Passenger Airbag Igniter 1 -N131- and the Front Passenger Airbag Igniter 2 -N132-.

Vehicles with Windshield Projection Head Up Display Control Module -J898-

-- Remove the windshield projection trim (head up display). Refer to WINDSHIELD PROJECTION (HEAD-UP DISPLAY) TRIM, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Cover the control module -2- with a soft towel.

CAUTION:

There is a risk of destroying the windshield projection head up display control module.

- Only remove the designated bolts from the control module.

- Never remove the bolts for the housing upper section.

-- Remove the bolts -1, 3 and 4-.

-- Move the Windshield Projection Head Up Display Control Module -J898- toward the rear until the instrument panel can be removed.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.

-- Remove the expanding rivets -1-.

-- Remove the screws -arrows- for the instrument panel -2-.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.

-- Unclip and free up the wiring harnesses from the instrument panel -1-.

-- Remove the instrument panel -1- carefully from the mounts -2- toward the rear off the crossmember.

-- Remove the instrument panel carefully toward the rear while guiding the wiring harnesses out.

-- Remove the instrument panel from the vehicle interior and lay it on a soft and clean surface.
