Instrument Panel CROSSMEMBER, Removing And Installing: Removing

-- Remove the windshield wiper motor. Refer to WINDSHIELD WIPER MOTOR -V-, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the plugs -2- outward.
-- Remove the bolts -1- for the crossmember on the plenum chamber rear panel using the Socket Bit XZN 10:T10501 .
-- Remove the windshield. Refer to WINDSHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Pay attention to the safety precautions when working with pyrotechnic components. Refer to SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING WITH PYROTECHNIC COMPONENTS .

- Check if the airbag indicator lamp turns on or blinks.
- If the airbag indicator lamp turns on or blinks, the DTC memory must be read.
- If >>short circuit to positive<< is a DTC memory entry, disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .
- If there is a DTC memory entry, the Guided Fault Finding instructions on the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester must always be followed.
- If the airbag indicator lamp does not turn on or blink, or there is no DTC memory entry with >>short circuit to positive<< : switch off the ignition, keep the ignition key outside of the vehicle and wait 10 seconds.

-- Remove the instrument panel. Refer to INSTRUMENT PANEL, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the air duct to the driver side instrument panel vent. Refer to AIR DUCTS AND VENT IN PASSENGER COMPARTMENT REAR, PR NUMBER KH5/ 9AU/ 9AE .
-- Loosen the air duct intermediate piece for the driver side instrument panel vent from the air distribution housing, Refer to OVERVIEW - AIR ROUTING AND AIR DISTRIBUTION IN VEHICLE INTERIOR
-- Remove the air duct to the center instrument panel vents. Refer to AIR DUCTS AND VENT IN PASSENGER COMPARTMENT REAR, PR NUMBER KH5/ 9AU/ 9AE .
-- Remove the air duct intermediate piece to the center defroster vent. Refer to AIR DUCT FOR DEFROST AIR VENT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the air duct to the front passenger side instrument panel vent. Refer to OVERVIEW - AIR ROUTING AND AIR DISTRIBUTION IN VEHICLE INTERIOR .
-- Remove the driver side footwell vent. Refer to DRIVER SIDE FOOTWELL VENT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Loosen Fuse Panel F -SF- with the bracket from the instrument panel crossmember. Refer to COMPONENT LOCATION OVERVIEW - RELAY PANELS, FUSE PANELS AND E-BOXES .
-- Equipped on some models: remove the bracket for the Fragrance System Functional Unit -GX43- and Air Freshening System Control Module -J1101-. Refer to COMPONENT LOCATION OVERVIEW - AIR IONIZATION .
-- Remove the steering column from the instrument panel crossmember and lay it on the floor of the vehicle. Refer to STEERING COLUMN, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
TIP:
Using the Window Release Tool:T10236 makes it easier to loosen the wires.
-- Take pictures of the wires to ensure correct installation.
-- Cut the cable ties, unclip the wires on the instrument panel crossmember and free up.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.
-- Remove the bolt -1-.
-- Remove the bolt -arrow- for the A/C unit.
-- For reinstallation, mark the vertical and lengthwise position on the instrument panel crossmember.
-- Push the carpet in the threaded connection area to the side and remove the bolts -1-.
-- Remove the bolt -2- for the A/C unit.
-- Repeat the procedure on the opposite side.
-- Remove the bolt -1- and nut -2-.
-- Repeat the procedure on the opposite side.
-- Unclip, disengage and free up the wires on the instrument panel crossmember.
-- Disengage the instrument panel crossmember with a second technician and remove it toward the rear out of the vehicle interior.
