Transmission, Removing, Vehicles With 3.0L TDI Engine (T7V. T2P)

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

Gearbox Support:T40173  , Preparing:

-- The bracket -arrow- must be turned so that the longer side faces upward, as shown.

Removing

-- Position the front wheels so they are in the straight-ahead position.

CAUTION:

Risk of destroying electronic components when disconnecting the battery.

  • Follow the steps when disconnecting the battery.

-- Disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .

-- Remove the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER ELEMENT, REPLACING AND CLEANING HOUSING .

-- Remove the noise insulations. Refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to the appropriate Service Information .

-- Remove the subframe crossbrace. Refer to SUBFRAME CROSSBRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the front exhaust pipe as a unit with the SCR catalytic converter. Refer to the appropriate Exhaust System article .

-- Remove the rear EGR cooler. Refer to the appropriate Exhaust System article .

-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear and then push the splines together. Refer to STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the nuts -arrows- and remove the stabilizer bar.

-- Sway stabilization equipment version: tie up the stabilizer bar with sway stabilization.

-- Remove the bolts -1 and 2-.

CAUTION:

There is a risk of damaging the boots.

  • Do not grab the boots when removing the steering gear.

-- Push the steering gear slightly to the side in direction of -arrow A- and remove it upward in direction of -arrow B-.

-- Secure the steering gear with cable tie on the subframe and do not remove it completely.

CAUTION:

Risk of damaging the steering gear.

  • Do not hang the steering gear on the wires.

-- Remove the right and left subframe shield. Refer to SUBFRAME CROSSBRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

CAUTION:

There is a risk of destroying the transmission control module (Mechatronic) with static discharge.

  • Do not touch connector terminals in the transmission connector with hands.

-- To discharge static electricity, touch the transmission housing (without wearing gloves).

-- Release and disconnect the right connector on the transmission -1-.

-- Free up the wiring harness -2- -arrows-.

-- Release and disconnect the left connector on the transmission -arrow-.

-- Turn the twist lock counter-clockwise -arrow- and release the front connector -1- from the transmission.

-- Free up the wiring harness -1- on the transmission -arrows-.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the heat shield from the right drive axle.

-- Remove the right and left drive axles from the transmission and move it to the side. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the upper EGR pipe. Refer to the appropriate Exhaust System article .

-- Remove the right coolant pipe. Refer to the appropriate Cooling System article .

-- Remove the rear coolant pipe. Refer to the appropriate Cooling System article .

-- Remove the Transmission Fluid Cooling Valve -N509-. Refer to the appropriate Cooling System article .

-- Open the hose clamps -2 and 3- and remove the coolant hoses from the ATF cooler.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.

-- Push the ATF cooler to the side with the hoses -1 and 4- connected.

-- Release and disconnect the connectors -1 and 2-.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and free up the wire.

-- Secure the bracket with NOx Sensor Control Module 2 -J881- and Particulate Sensor -G784- to the side.

-- Release the retainers in direction of -arrows A- and slide the sleeve -1- on the emergency release cable in the direction of -arrow B-.

-- Disengage the rear emergency release cable from the front emergency release cable in direction of -arrow C-.

-- Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission in direction of -arrow-.

-- Counterhold the crankshaft to loosen the torque converter bolts.

NOTE:

Turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation.

-- Remove the six bolts -arrow- for the torque converter from the drive plate -1-. To do so turn the crankshaft respectively a 60° additional turn in the direction of engine rotation.

-- Remove the bolts -2 to 5- and -8 to 11- that connect the engine to the transmission.

The Ring Wrench - 16mm:T10388  can be used to loosen the bolt -1-.

CAUTION:

Danger of leaks in the ATF pan.

  • The Gearbox Support:T40173  must not be set on the ATF pan.
  • The ATF cooler is pushed aside and removed with the transmission, do not damage the ATF cooler with the Gearbox Support:T40173  .

-- Place the Gearbox Support:T40173  on the Engine and Gearbox Jack:VAS6931  with the mounting blocks -1 and 2- under the transmission as shown.

-- Secure the transmission with the tensioning strap -1- from the engine and transmission.

NOTE:

For clarity, the Gearbox Support:T40173  is not illustrated.

-- Remove the bolts -arrows- for the tunnel crossmember.

-- Lower the tunnel crossmember to the dimension -a- using the Engine and Gearbox Jack:VAS6931  .

-- Support the engine in the installation position. Refer to the appropriate Engine article .

-- Remove the bolts -6 and 7- and -11- that connect the engine to the transmission.

-- Remove the last bolt connecting the starter -1- to the transmission at the same time separate the transmission in steps from the engine.

-- Lower the transmission carefully using the Engine and Gearbox Jack:VAS6931  . If required, change the angle of the engine with the Engine Support: T10533/1  .
