-- The bracket -arrow- must be turned so that the longer side faces upward, as shown.
Removing
-- Position the front wheels so they are in the straight-ahead position.
Risk of destroying electronic components when disconnecting the battery.
- Follow the steps when disconnecting the battery.
-- Disconnect the battery. Refer to BATTERY, DISCONNECTING AND CONNECTING .
-- Remove the air filter housing. Refer to AIR FILTER ELEMENT, REPLACING AND CLEANING HOUSING .
-- Remove the noise insulations. Refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the subframe crossbrace. Refer to SUBFRAME CROSSBRACE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the driveshaft. Refer to the appropriate Service Information .
-- Remove the catalytic converter. Refer to the appropriate Exhaust System article .
-- Remove the starter. Refer to STARTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
To remove the transmission, the engine support with the engine mount must be used again to hold the engine in the installation position. However, the engine support and engine mount are only secured. The old bolts that were removed can be reused for this.
-- Reinstall the engine support -1- after removing the starter. Tighten the bolts -arrows- hand-tight. Refer to the appropriate Engine System article .
-- Insert the right engine mount -1-. Tighten the bolts -arrows- hand-tight.
-- Tighten the engine support bolt -arrow- hand-tight on the engine mount.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and remove the heat shield from the right drive axle.
-- Remove the right and left drive axles from the transmission. Refer to DRIVE AXLE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the steering intermediate shaft from the steering gear and then push the splines together. Refer to STEERING INTERMEDIATE SHAFT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Release the retainers in direction of -arrows A- and slide the sleeve -1- on the emergency release cable in the direction of -arrow B-.
-- Disengage the rear emergency release cable from the front emergency release cable in direction of -arrow C-.
-- Drain the coolant. Refer to the appropriate Cooling System article .
-- Remove the ATF cooler. Refer to ATF COOLER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Release and disconnect the connector -1-.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows-.
-- Tie the After-Run Coolant Pump -V51- with the connected coolant hoses to the side.
- The hose clamps -2- must not be opened.
There is a risk of destroying the transmission control module (Mechatronic) with static discharge.
- Do not touch connector terminals in the transmission connector with hands.
-- To discharge static electricity, touch the transmission housing (without wearing gloves).
-- Disconnect the connector -1- on the transmission by turning the twist lock counter-clockwise in direction of -arrow-.
-- Release and disconnect the connector -2-.
-- Free up the wiring harness on the transmission -arrows-.
-- Remove the coolant pipe from the transmission. Refer to the appropriate Cooling System article .
-- Remove the Climatronic Coolant Shut-Off Valve -N422-. Refer to the appropriate Cooling System article .

-- Support the engine in the installation position. Refer to the approrpiate Engine System article .
-- Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission in direction of -arrow-.
-- Counterhold the crankshaft to loosen the torque converter bolts.
Danger of camshaft timing chain skipping.
- Turn the crankshaft only in the direction of engine rotation -arrow-.
-- Remove the three bolts -arrow- for the torque converter from the drive plate -1-. To do so, turn the crankshaft an additional 120° turn in the direction of engine rotation.
-- Remove the lower bolts -7 to 9- connecting the engine to the transmission.
Danger of leaks in the ATF pan.
- The :T40173 must not be set on the ATF pan.
-- Place the :T40173 on the :VAS6931 with the mounting blocks under the transmission as shown.
