Brake Pads, Removing And Installing: Installing

Install in the reverse order of removal while noting the following:

TIP:

• Clean bolts before reusing.
• Replace damaged bolts.
• Always replace self-locking bolts.

TIP:

• Grease the guide pin with Lubricating Grease.
• Do "not" coat the rubber components, seals and adhesive surfaces for the brake pad backing plate with grease or paste.

When changing the brake pad, check the brake rotor for wear and damage.

• Brake rotor wear limit. Refer to TECHNICAL DATA .

• Always replace brake pads on both sides of the axle.
• When installing new brake pads use the repair kit and new brake pad wear indicator wire.
• Always replace the self-locking bolts for the brake calipers after removal.

• Use only mineral spirits to clean the brake caliper.
• Check the protective caps of the brake caliper pistons for damage and install the complete repair kit, if necessary. Refer to BRAKE CALIPER PISTON, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Use the :T10145  to completely press back the brake caliper piston.

To prevent the brake fluid from overflowing out of the brake fluid reservoir, extract some of the brake fluid.

-- If the brake fluid is up to the "MAX" marking on used brake pads, it must be extracted.

• Use the :VAS5234  to extract brake fluid from the brake fluid reservoir.

-- Use the :T10145  to completely press back the brake caliper piston.

-- Clean the brake carrier -1- on the contact surfaces -arrow- for the brake pad springs. Coat the contact surfaces thin with Grease.

-- If reusing, install the marked brake pads in the same location.

-- Insert brake pads in brake carrier.

-- Push the brake caliper over the installed brake pads.

• Make sure the brake hose is routed correctly.
• Make sure the brake hose is not pinched, bent, twisted or rubbing against the vehicle.

TIP:

Coat the guide pins with Lubricating Grease before installing.

• Clean bolts before reusing.
• Replace damaged bolts.
• Always replace self-locking bolts.

-- Tighten the brake caliper bolts -arrows- by counterholding the guide pins -1 and 2-.

• Check the brake pad wear indicator contact for damage and replace if necessary.
• Make sure that the brake pad wear indicator contact fits correctly in the brake pad.
• If the clips go missing, the brake pad wear indicator wire must be replaced.

-- Coat the guide pin with Lubricating Grease.

-- Tighten the new brake caliper bolts -arrows-. To do so, counterhold the guide pins at the nuts -1 and 2-.

• Check the brake pad wear indicator contact for damage and replace if necessary.
• Make sure that the brake pad wear indicator contact fits correctly in the brake pad.
• If the clips go missing, the brake pad wear indicator wire must be replaced.

-- Insert the brake pad wear indicator contact -4- with the clip -3- into the inner brake pad until it engages.

-- Secure the brake pad wear indicator wire with the dust cap -2- and the clips -1 and 5-.

-- With the vehicle stationary, firmly press the brake pedal several times so that the brake pads in the operating condition properly sit in their respective position.

-- Drive the parking brake motors up using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester by following the instructions in the display.
