Brake Caliper Piston, Removing And Installing: Removing

-- Remove the brake caliper. Refer to BRAKE CALIPER, REPLACING .

-- Remove the brake pads. Refer to BRAKE PADS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Tension the brake caliper in a vise with protective covers over the jaws.

-- Make sure that the paint coat on the brake caliper is not damaged when removing the brake caliper pistons and the protective caps.

-- To prevent damage to the brake caliper paint coating, place a piece of rubber between the Piston Resetting Tool -T10145- and the brake caliper.

-- Only one brake caliper piston can be pressed out at a time.

CAUTION:

Leaking brake fluid increases the risk of injury.

Irritation and injury to the skin and eyes are possible.

- Wear protective eyewear.

- Wear safety gloves.

-- Place a cloth over the brake caliper chamber to catch any spraying brake fluid. Place another cloth tightly around the compressed air gun nozzle on the brake caliper.

CAUTION:

Risk of injury due to sudden release of the brake caliper piston when pressing out.

- Never reach with the fingers into the brake caliper opening.

-- Use the Piston Resetting Tool -T10145- -A- to hold the opposite brake caliper piston in the brake caliper -1- as shown.

-- Block the other brake caliper pistons using wooden blocks -C-, for example. Also place a protection -B- in front of the Piston Resetting Tool -T10145- so that the brake caliper piston does not become damaged when being pressed out.

-- Position the nozzle of the compressed air gun -D- at the hole for the brake hose. Use compressed air to push the brake caliper piston -3- out of the brake caliper.

-- Carefully pry the protective cap -1- and the seal out of the brake caliper with the Removal Tool -VAS40338- -2- using gentle lever movements, and do not damage the groove for the protective cap in the brake caliper while doing so (example illustration).

-- Remove the seal -2- using the Release Tool:T10498 .

-- When removing, make sure that the cylinder surface is not damaged.

-- Repeat the procedure for the other brake caliper pistons.
