TIP:
- Careful adjustment of the differential is important for service life and smooth running of final drive.
- Adjusting the final drive (differential) is required if the differential and the differential bearing are being replaced.
- The drive pinion remains installed, for this reason the adjustment backlash must always be achieved. Otherwise the drive train will be damaged!
- The transmission is secured to the assembly stand and the flywheel with the right flange shaft is removed.
Total Shim Thickness "S total " for Shims "S 1 " + "S 2 ", Determining
-- Remove the left tapered roller bearing outer race from the transmission housing. Refer to Figure.
-- Drive the new outer race for left tapered roller bearing with the old shim "S2 " with the example thickness of 1.05 mm into the transmission housing.
- For the initial measurement, install the old shim "S2 " with a thickness for example of 1.05 mm. This will be indicated by "S2 *" in the following. After determining the torsional backlash, "S2 *" is replaced by final "S 2 ".
-- Press in the new outer race for the right angular contact ball bearing with the old shim "S 1 " in for example of 1.21 mm in the final drive cover. The larger diameter of the Seal Installer - Crankshaft:VW 204 B faces the outer race.
-- Insert the differential into the transmission housing.
Danger of causing damage to the gear set.
- Check the torsional backlash when tightening the final drive cover. Some play must always be present.
- If the transmission is disassembled, the play at the pinion can be checked by turning back and forth.
- If transmission is not disassembled, install the Crown Wheel Adjusting Tool:VW 521 and check play.
-- Fasten the final drive cover carefully with four bolts diagonally to 20 Nm.
