Brake Pads, Removing And Installing, Steel Brakes: Installing

Install in reverse order of removal and note the following:

Clean bolts before reusing.
Replace damaged bolts.
Always replace self-locking bolts.

Coat the brake pad guides in the brake caliper with Lithium Grease: G 052 150 A2 .
Do not lubricate the seals for brake pistons and rubber components.

-- If the brake pads are being replaced, check the brake rotors for wear and damage.

Brake rotor wear limit. Refer to TECHNICAL DATA, BRAKES .

NOTE:

Always replace brake pads on the same axle at the same time.

Replacing the brake pad wear indicator wire.

Use the complete repair kit when installing new brake pads.

WARNING:

Health Risk.

Do not blow out brake system with compressed air.

NOTE:

Use only mineral spirits to clean the brake caliper.

Check the protective caps of the brake caliper pistons for damage and install the complete repair kit. Refer to BRAKE PISTON, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Place the : T10145 with a wooden block -1- placed between it and the old brake pads and push the brake caliper pistons back completely into the brake caliper.

To prevent the brake fluid from overflowing, extract some of the brake fluid out of the brake fluid reservoir.

CAUTION:

There is a risk of contamination and paint damage from escaping brake fluid.

If the brake pads are worn out and brake fluid is filled unnecessary, the brake fluid may overflow, causing the pistons in the brake cylinders to be pressed back.
Check the brake fluid level before pressing back the pistons. If there is brake fluid up to the "MAX" mark, some brake fluid will need to be extracted.
Use the Brake Charger/Bleeder Unit: VAS5234 to extract brake fluid from the brake fluid reservoir.

NOTE:

Coat the guide pins and brake pad contact surfaces with Lithium Grease: G 052 150 A2 .

Do not lubricate the seals for brake pistons and rubber components.

-- Clip the brake pad retaining plate -1 and 2- in the brake caliper.

Depending on the model a second brake pad spring is installed.

After removal the second brake pad spring must also be installed.

Make sure the brake pad springs are in the correct installation position.

NOTE:

Do not change the shape of the brake pad spring and brake pad retaining plate.

Damaged brake pad springs and brake pad retaining plates must be replaced.

-- Clean the brake caliper at the contact surfaces -arrows- for the brake pad retaining plates and thinly coat with Lithium Grease: G 052 150 A2 .

-- If re-using, install the marked brake pads in the same location.

-- Insert the brake pads -3 and 4- into the brake caliper one after the other by pressing each brake pad against the brake pad springs and pushing them all the way onto the brake pad retaining plates.

-- Install the brake caliper. Refer to BRAKE CALIPER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING, STEEL BRAKES .

NOTE:

Make sure the brake hose is routed correctly.

Make sure the brake hose is not pinched, bent, twisted or rubbing against the vehicle.

-- Install the brake pad wear indicator wire. Refer to BRAKE PAD WEAR INDICATOR WIRE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Clean bolts before reusing.
Replace damaged bolts.
Always replace self-locking bolts.

-- Check brake fluid level, and fill if necessary.

WARNING:

Risk of accident!

With the vehicle stationary, firmly press the brake pedal several times so that the brake pads in the operating condition properly sit in their respective position.
Make sure the brakes are working correctly before driving the vehicle for the first time.
