Timing Chain, Checking

Special tools and workshop equipment required

If an elongated camshaft timing chain is suspected based on complaints (for example noises), the timing chain can be checked as described in the following.

Procedure 

-- Remove the front noise insulation. Refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- If installed, remove bolt -arrow- to do so loosen the bumper cover end plate on the lock carrier. Refer to OVERVIEW - BUMPER COVER .

-- Push the coolant pipes to the side.

-- Remove the plug -arrow-. The plugs must be replaced.

-- Turn the crankshaft with : T40263  , : T40314  and a 24 mm socket only in the direction of engine rotation -arrow-.

-- Turn the vibration damper in direction of engine rotation until the chain tensioner piston is extended the maximum distance in direction of -arrow-.

-- Count the visible piston teeth.

TIP:

The visible teeth are all of the teeth that are located to the right of the chain tensioner housing -arrow-.

• If six or fewer teeth are visible, the timing chain must not be replaced.
• If six or fewer teeth are visible and there is an entry in the DTC memory: adjust the chain length using the Vehicle Diagnostic Tester, 01 - Chain Length Adaptation Diagnosis  and delete the DTC memory.
• If seven or more teeth are visible: replace the camshaft timing chain. Refer to CAMSHAFT TIMING CHAIN, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

Tightening Specifications 

• Refer to OVERVIEW - NOISE INSULATION .
• Refer to OVERVIEW - COOLANT PIPES .
