Timing Chain, Checking

Special tools and workshop equipment required 

If an elongated camshaft timing chain is suspected based on complaints (for example noises), the timing chain can be checked as described in the following.

Procedure 

-- Remove the front noise insulation. Refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- If installed, remove bolt -arrow- to do so loosen the bumper cover end plate on the lock carrier. Refer to OVERVIEW - BUMPER COVER .

-- Push the coolant pipes to the side.

-- Remove the plug -arrow-. The plugs must be replaced.

CAUTION:

Risk of Damaging the Engine by the Timing Mechanism Skipping.

- Only let the engine turn in the direction of engine rotation.

-- Turn the crankshaft with : T40263  , : T40314  and a 24 mm socket only in the direction of engine rotation -arrow-.

-- Turn the vibration damper in direction of engine rotation until the chain tensioner piston is extended the maximum distance in direction of -arrow-.

-- Count the visible piston teeth.

TIP:

The visible teeth are all of the teeth that are located to the right of the chain tensioner housing -arrow-.

Tightening Specifications
