Camshaft Timing Chain, Removing From Camshafts, Cylinder Bank 1 (Right): Notes
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Torque Wrench, 6-50Nm: VAG1331A
- Electronic Torque Wrench 3-60Nm: VAS6583
- Locking Pins: T03006
- Crankshaft Locking Pin: T40069 (with the engine removed)
- Wrench - 21mm: T40263
- Locking Pin: T10492
- Adapter: T40314
- Camshaft Positioning Tool: T40331
- Socket E24: T90000
- Counter Holder: T90001
- Counter Holder: T90002
- Torque Wrench Insert - Ring Tool Attachment AF41: VAS261001
For the following procedure the camshaft timing chain remains on the engine.
: T40331 , Preparing
- The lettering "A" on the : T40331/1 points forward.
- The : T40331/6 and : T40331/7 as well as the washers on the bolts : T40331/9 must be positioned using the alignment pins -arrows-.
-- Tighten the bolts hand-tight.
Removing
Risk of destroying the engine by adjusting the valve timing.
- Never turn the crankshaft and camshafts if the chain drive is not completely installed.
-- Remove the cylinder bank 1 upper timing chain cover. Refer to UPPER TIMING CHAIN COVERS, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Remove the right lower air duct pipe. Refer to AIR DUCT PIPE, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
Audi RS6 / RS7:
-- Release the catches -1 and 3- and remove the coupling -2- from the lock carrier -4-.
All:
Risk of damaging the engine by the timing mechanism skipping.
- Only let the engine turn in the direction of engine rotation.
-- Using the : T40263 and : T40314 , turn the crankshaft -arrow- until the vibration damper is at "TDC".
Audi A8 / S8:
-- If the camshaft housing is supposed to be removed afterwards, then remove the bolts -arrows-, free up the bracket -1- and push to the side using the Mechanical Coolant Pump Switch -N649- -2-.
All:
- The mark -1 or 2- on the camshaft adjusters must align with the corresponding locating tabs -arrows- on the camshaft housing. If necessary turn the crankshaft an additional turn.
-- Pierce the exhaust camshaft plug -2- in the center with a screwdriver -1- in direction of -arrow- and carefully lift, at the same time do not damage the sealing surface.
-- Repeat the procedure on the intake camshaft plugs.
-- Tighten the Adapter : T40331/2 on the camshaft housing to 9 Nm.
- It must be easy to insert the : T40331/1
.
- Do not use a hammer to install the camshaft positioning tool.
-- Insert the prepared : T40331/1 all the way into the camshafts. If necessary slightly turn the crankshaft.
- The : T40331/6 engages as shown in the flattened position -1- on the intake camshaft.
- The : T40331/7 engages as shown in the flattened position -2- on the exhaust camshaft.
-- Tighten the bolts -arrows- to 9 Nm.
TIP:
The : T90001 can only be inserted in one position
There is a risk of damaging the camshaft if handled incorrectly.
- Never use the camshaft positioning tool as a counterholder.
-- To counterhold, position the Socket : VAS261001 on the corresponding camshaft adjuster using the Counterholder: T90001 and loosen the control valve -1- with the Socket E24: T90000 .
-- For reinstallation mark the camshaft adjuster to the camshafts using paint.
Procedures, where the Engine is NOT Removed:
-- Insert the : T10492 on the groove -1- in the vibration damper all the way in the hole -arrow- in the belt pulley side sealing flange. If necessary push the crankshaft slightly back and forth.
Procedure, if the Engine is Removed Due to Preliminary Work.
-- Remove the plug.
-- Install the : T40069 in the hole and tighten to 20 Nm. If necessary push the crankshaft slightly back and forth.
Continuation:
-- Push back the pistons of the chain tensioner -2- using a screwdriver -1- all the way back in direction of -arrow- and lock the chain tensioner using the : T03006 .
TIP:
The piston is lubricated with oil and can only be pushed back slowly by applying constant pressure.
-- Remove the control valves -1 and 2- and remove both camshaft adjusters.
