Automatic Seat Belt TENSIONING System, S4: Installing: Notes

NOTE:

Plastic barrel clips on release cable and retractor cable ends must always be replaced.

Retaining lips for cables on retaining brackets must always be replaced. Different cables are required for different transmission versions. Refer to CABLE IDENTIFICATION .

WARNING:

DO NOT apply grease to plastic barrel clips, retaining brackets, cable ends or cable mounting grooves in retaining brackets.

-- Install new plastic barrel clip on end of release cable.

-- Install new plastic barrel clip on retractor cable end.

-- Lightly lubricate grommet for release cable in front panel.

-- Lightly lubricate cable in area of grommet.

-- Insert cable through grommet from inside.

Ensure grommet is properly installed into front panel to prevent leaks.

-- Install cable so white assembly marker -4- is in front of grommet -3- in front panel.

Dimension -a- = 15 ± 5.0 mm (0.59 ± 0.20 in.)

Cable Routing in Engine Compartment

-- Route left retractor cable -2- so it rests against retaining bracket and fits into center slot of retaining clip -5-.

-- Route right retractor cable -3- so it rests against retaining racket and fits into lower slot of retaining clip -5-.

WARNING:

DO NOT allow cables to become crossed when installing into retaining bracket. Cables must be fully seated into the slots on the retaining brackets.

-- Hook right/left release cables into retaining brackets so plastic barrel clip is centered against slot in retaining bracket.

-- Tabs -arrow- must rest against slot as shown.

-- Route retractor cables around cable guide bracket on transmission.

-- Insert left/right cable into slots on retaining brackets.

-- Install retaining clips -5- in retaining brackets.

WARNING:

Retaining clips must be installed correctly to ensure proper function of the automatic seat belt tensioning system.

-- Push retaining clip fully forward over all cables on bracket.

-- Hook on retaining clip must engage guide bracket through elongated hole -arrow-.

-- Press retaining clip onto locating pin and secure.

-- Tighten bolt -4- to 40 Nm (30 ft lb).

-- Secure cable with tie-wraps -1- as shown.

Distance between retaining bracket and tie-wrap is 40 ± 10 mm (1.57 ± 0.39 in.).

Driver Side

-- Secure release cable on driver's side, kink free, with tie-wrap -3-.

-- Reinstall foot rest support -2-.

-- Secure cable to coupling tube -1-.

-- Reinstall all removed interior trim.

Passenger Side

-- Install release cable, kink free, next to electronics box -1-.
