Engine And Transmission, Separating
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Torque Wrench 1332 Insert - Ring Wrench - 16mm: VAG1332/14
- Scissor Lift Table - Audi Set: VAS6131/10
- Scissor Lift Table - A8 Set - Adapter: VAS6131/11-1 from Scissor Lift Table - A8 Set: VAS6131/11 , not illustrated
- Hose Clip Pliers: VAS6362
- Torque Wrench Adapter: VAS6948
- Wrench - 21mm: T40263
- Adapter: T40314
- Spacer Sleeve: T40330/3 and a long bolt from the Counterholder: T40330 , not illustrated
- Engine Support: T10533
Procedure
- Engine/transmission assembly removed and placed on the Scissor Lift Table: VAS6131B .
- During installation, all heat shield boots must be installed at the same location.
-- If not already removed, remove the A/C compressor ribbed belt. Refer to RIBBED BELT, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Loosen the hose clamp -3- and remove the coolant hose.
-- Remove the bolts -arrows- and push the ATF cooler with the hoses -1, 2 and 4- attached slightly to the side.
-- Remove the lower cover -1- from the transmission in direction of -arrow-.
Risk of damaging the engine by the timing mechanism skipping.
- Only let the engine turn in the direction of engine rotation.
-- To loosen the bolts, counterhold the crankshaft on the drive plate using the Wrench - 21mm: T40263 and Adapter: T40314 on the vibration damper.
-- Remove the six bolts -arrow- on the drive plate -1-. Turn the crankshaft an additional 60° in the direction of engine rotation.
-- Remove the catalytic converters. Refer to CATALYTIC CONVERTER, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .
-- Open the heat shield boot.
-- Disconnect the connector -2-.
-- Loosen the hose clamp -1- and remove the coolant hose.
-- Remove bolts -arrows-, and set aside the Transmission Coolant Valve -N488-.
Vehicles without Auxiliary Radiator for Transmission Fluid Cooler
-- Remove the nuts -4-.
-- Move the Transmission Fluid Cooling Pump -V478- -10- with the bracket -3- to the side.
Continuation for All Vehicles:
-- Equip the Scissor Lift Table: VAS6131B as follows:
- The remaining mounting elements remain unchanged.

-- Tighten the Engine Support: T10533/1 with the Spacer Sleeve: T40330/3 and bolt as shown on the front left of the engine.
-- Tighten the engine supports on the Scissor Lift Table to 20 Nm.
-- Place the mounting element from the Scissor Lift Table - Audi Set : VAS6131/10 on the left side of the transmission.
-- Place the mounting elements from the Scissor Lift Table - Audi Set: VAS6131/10 and Scissor Lift Table - A8 Set Adapter: VAS6131/11-1 on the right of the transmission.
-- Turn the left and right spindles upward until all the mounting pins come into contact with the mounting points.
-- Fasten the mounting element base plates to 20 Nm on the Scissor Lift Table: VAS6131B .
-- Remove the bolts -2 through 11- that attach the engine to the transmission.
-- Loosen the bolt -1- for the starter using the Adapter: VAS6948 and Torque Wrench 1332 Insert - Ring Wrench - 16mm: VAG1332/14
-- Loosen the clamping screws on the side of the Scissor Lift Table: VAS6131B and pull the rear table top with the transmission slightly to the rear -arrow-. While doing so, remove the starter bolt completely.
-- Pull the transmission all the way to the rear. If necessary, lower it slightly using the front spindles.
