Wheel Bearing At Standard Vehicle Height, Lifting Vehicles With Air Suspension
- All bolts on chassis components with bonded rubber bushings must be tightened at standard vehicle height. Refer to STANDARD VEHICLE HEIGHT FOR AXLE ALIGNMENT ON VEHICLES WITH AIR SUSPENSION, CHECKING .
- Bonded rubber bushings have a limited range of rotation. Axle components with bonded rubber bushings must be brought into the position they will be in when driving before they are tightened (standard vehicle height).
- Otherwise, the bonded rubber bushing will have tension, which will reduce the service life.
- By raising the corresponding suspension using the Engine and Gearbox Jack: VAS 6931 and Support Device: VAS 6931/1 , this position can be simulated on the hoist.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
- Engine and Gearbox Jack: VAS 6931
- Support Device: VAS 6931/1 , not illustrated
- Tensioning Strap: T10038
Procedure
- Vehicles with active suspension: pay attention to the safety precautions. Refer to SAFETY PRECAUTIONS WHEN WORKING ON VEHICLES WITH ACTIVE SUSPENSION .
-- Determine the standard vehicle height. Refer to STANDARD VEHICLE HEIGHT FOR AXLE ALIGNMENT ON VEHICLES WITH AIR SUSPENSION, CHECKING .
-- Note the measurement. This will be needed when tightening the bolts/nuts.
- Before the respective suspension is lifted, the vehicle must be tied down to the hoist lifting arms with the Tensioning Strap: T10038 .
Front axle
Vehicle slipping from the hoist.
- Secure the vehicle on the hoist.
-- Lightly secure both sides of the vehicle to the hoist lifting arms -arrow B- using the Tensioning Straps: T10038 -1- on the upper rear control arm mounts -arrow A-.
Rear axle
Vehicle slipping from the hoist.
- Secure the vehicle on the hoist.
-- Lightly secure both sides of the vehicle to the hoist lifting arms -arrow B-, using the Tensioning Straps: T10038 -item 1- on the upper rear control arm mounts -arrow A-, for this, put a thin piece of rubber -2- in between to protect the paint.
Continuation for both axles
There is a risk of accident from the spring force of the air suspension if the vehicle slides off the hoist.
When lifting the vehicle on the hoist, the spring force of the air suspension remains in full effect.
- Before raising the wheel bearing at standard vehicle height, reduce the spring force of the air suspension by completely bleeding the system.
-- Bleed the air suspension system. Refer to AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM, FILLING AND BLEEDING .
-- Remove the wheel. Refer to WHEELS AND TIRES .
-- Install the Support Device: VAS 6931/1 -item A- to the brake rotor -1- using two wheel bolts -2-.
-- Position the Engine and Gearbox Jack: VAS 6931 -item B- to the support bridge.
-- Lift the wheel bearing housing, until the dimension -a- has been reached.
There is a risk of an accident when lowering the vehicle when the engine and gearbox jack is underneath it.
- Never lower the vehicle when the engine and gearbox jack is underneath it.
- Never leave the engine and gearbox jack under the vehicle any longer than necessary.
-- Tighten the applicable bolts and nuts.
-- Lower the wheel bearing housing.
-- Move the Engine and Gearbox Jack: VAS 6931 to the side.
-- Fill the air suspension system. Refer to AIR SUSPENSION SYSTEM, FILLING AND BLEEDING .
- The vehicle may be removed from the vehicle hoist only after the air springs have been filled again.
