Shock Absorber Fork, Removing And Installing: Removing

Before starting work:

-- Versions with coil springs: determine the curb weight position. Refer to WHEEL BEARING IN CURB WEIGHT POSITION, LIFTING VEHICLES WITH COIL SPRING .

-- Versions with air suspension: determine the standard vehicle height. Refer to WHEEL BEARING AT STANDARD VEHICLE HEIGHT, LIFTING VEHICLES WITH AIR SUSPENSION .

-- Remove the front wheel. Refer to WHEELS AND TIRES .

-- Remove the noise insulation. Refer to NOISE INSULATION, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- Remove the subframe shield and move it to the side. Refer to SUBFRAME SHIELD, REMOVING AND INSTALLING .

-- To protect the threads, remove the nut -arrow- from the tie rod end joint pin until it is flush with the joint pin threads.

WARNING:

There is a risk of injury from falling components.

  • When pressing off, the tie rod end loosens abruptly from the wheel bearing housing. Use, for example, the :VAS6931  to secure.
CAUTION:

There is a risk of damaging the ball joint puller.

  • Make sure that both puller lever arms are parallel to each other when using maximum force.

-- Remove the tie rod end with the :VAS25805  from the wheel bearing housing.

-- Then remove the nut. Use a 6 mm inner hex socket to counterhold at the joint pin if necessary.

-- Clean the steering gear and the subframe near the boot.

-- Open the spring clamp -3- using the :VAS6362  .

-- Remove the clamp -1- and remove the boot -2- outward from the steering gear.

-- Remove the nut -2- and free up the coupling rod for the vehicle level sensor.

-- Disconnect the threaded connections -1 and 3- for the control arm.

NOTE:

To remove the bolt -1-, push the steering all the way to the left or right.

-- Remove the nut -3- and the bolt -1- for the coupling rod -2-.

-- Disconnect the threaded connection -1-.

-- Insert the :3424  into the slot in the shock absorber fork -arrow-.

CAUTION:

There is a risk of damaging the ball joint.

  • The upper control arm ball joint must not be pushed past the maximum bending point.

-- Remove the shock absorber fork downward from the shock absorber tube and remove, while pushing the wheel bearing housing carefully downward.
